DEPENDENT on GOD’S PRESENCE

“They that wait upon the Lord . . . shall walk and not faint.”

Isaiah 40:31

There is no thrill in walking; it is the test of all the stable qualities. To “walk and not faint” is the highest reach possible for strength. The word “walk” is used in the Bible to express the character— “John looking on Jesus as He walked, said, Behold the Lamb of God!” There is never anything abstract in the Bible, it is always vivid and real. God does not say—Be spiritual, but—“Walk before Me.”

When we are in an unhealthy state physically or emotionally, we always want thrills. In the physical domain this will lead to counterfeiting the Holy Ghost; in the emotional life it leads to inordinate affection and the destruction of morality; and in the spiritual domain if we insist on getting thrills, on mounting up with wings, it will end in the destruction of spirituality.

The reality of God’s presence is not dependent on any place, but only dependent upon the determination to set the Lord always before us. Our problems come when we refuse to bank on the reality of His presence. The experience the Psalmist speaks of—“Therefore will we not fear, though. . .”—will be ours when once we are based on Reality, not the consciousness of God’s presence but the reality of it—Why, He has been here all the time.!

At critical moments it is necessary to ask guidance, but it ought to be unnecessary to be saying always—“Oh Lord, direct me here, and there.” Of course He will! If our common-sense decisions are not His order, He will press through them and check; then we must be quiet and wait for the direction of His presence.

 

   O Lord, how wonderful are thy ways! When I recall the ways Thou

hast led me and borne with me, I am lost in wonder, love, and praise.

하나님의 임재에 의존하는

“여호와를 앙망하는 자는…걸어가도 피곤하지 아니하리라.”

                       이사야 40:31

걷는 데는 스릴이 없습니다. 걷는 것은 건강상태가 전체적으로 조화를 이루며 안정되어 있는지를 테스트하는 것입니다. “걸어가도 피곤하지 않다”는 것은 힘이 미칠 수 있는 최고 한도를 보여주는 것입니다. “걷는다”는 단어는 “걸어오시는 예수님을 보고, ‘보라 하나님의 어린 양이로다!’라고 세례 요한이 이른 바”와 같이 인격을 표현하기 위해 성경에서 사용됩니다. 성경에서는 어떠한 것도 추상적으로 표현되어 있지 않고 항상 생생하게 실제적으로 리얼하게 묘사되어 있습니다. 하나님께서는 ‘영적 존재가 되어라’가 아니고 ‘내 앞에서 행하라’고 이르십니다.

신체적으로 또는 정서적으로 건강하지 않은 상태에 우리가 있을 때 우리는 항시 스릴을 원합니다. 이것은 육신적인 영역에서는 성령의 역사로 가장하도록 이끌 것입니다. 감정적인 생활에 있어서는 지나친 애정과 도덕성의 파괴로 유도합니다. 그리고 영적인 영역에서는 우리가 스릴을 느끼고 날개를 달고 치솟기를 계속 고집한다면 결국 영성이 파괴되고 말 것입니다.

하나님 임재의 실체는 어떠한 장소에 좌우되지 않고 우리 앞에 주님을 항시 모시겠다는 결심에 의존할 뿐입니다. 주님 임재의 실체에 의지하기를 우리가 거부할 때 우리의 문제들이 발생합니다. “…할지라도 우리는 두려워하지 아니하리로다.”(시 46:3참조)라고 시편 기자가 얘기하는 경험은 주님의 실체가 우리의 존재 근거가 될 때 우리도 동일하게 체험하게 될 것이며, 하나님의 임재를 의식하는 것이 아니고, ‘이런, 주님께서 항상 여기에 계시지!’라고 감탄하는 것처럼 실제적으로 하나님께서 우리와 함께 계시는 것입니다.

중대한 순간들에 안내하여 주시기를 요청하는 것이 필요합니다. 그러나 “오오 주님, 여기로 그리고 저기로 이끌어주시옵소서.”라고 항상 말하고 있어서는 안 되겠지요. 물론 주님께서 인도하시겠지요! 우리의 상식적인 결정들이 주님의 명령이 아니라면 그것들을 압박하여 견제할 것입니다. 그렇게 되면 우리는 침묵을 지키고 주님의 임재로 지도하여 주실 것을 기다려야 합니다.

 

   오오 주님, 주님의 방법들은 얼마나 놀라운지요! 주님께서

저를 이끌어주시고 참아주신 방법들을 제가 기억해 낼 때 저는 경탄,

사랑, 찬양에 잠겨 있습니다.
