THE MYSTERY OF BELIEVING

“And he said, Who art Thou, Lord?”

Acts 9:5.

 

By the miracle of Redemption Saul of Tarsus was turned in one second from a strong-willed, intense Pharisee into a humble, devoted slave of the Lord Jesus.

There is nothing miraculous about the things we can explain. We command what we are able to explain, consequently it is natural to seek to explain. It is not natural to obey; nor is it necessarily sinful to disobey. There is no moral virtue in obedience unless there is a recognition of a higher authority in the one who dictates. It is possibly an emancipation to the other person if he does not obey. If one man says to another—“You must,” and “You shall,” he breaks the human spirit and unfits it for God. A man is a slave for obeying unless behind his obedience there is a recognition of a holy God. Many a soul begins to come to God when he flings off being religious, because there is only one Master of the human heart, and that is not religion but Jesus Christ. But woe be to me if when I see Him I say—I will not. He will never insist that I do, but I have begun to sign the death warrant of the Son of God in my soul. When I stand face to face with Jesus Christ and say—I will not, He will never insist; but I am backing away from the recreating power of His Redemption. It is a matter of indifference to God’s grace how abominable I am if I come to the light [Updated edition: It makes no difference to God’s grace what an abomination I am, if I will only come to the light.] ; but woe be to me if I refuse the light (see John 3:19-21).

 

   “Lo, there are but the outskirts of His ways: but the thunder of

His power who can understand?” So many homeless moods float

through my soul; I have no wisdom, no understanding of

things pertaining to Thee until Thou dost lighten my darkness.

믿음의 불가사의

“그가 말하되 주여 누구시니이까?”

사도행전 9:5

 

강퍅하고 고집센 바리새인이었던 다소의 사울이 구속의 기적을 통해 순식간에  겸손하고 헌신적인 예수님의 종으로 변화되었습니다.

우리가 설명할 수 있는 것들에는 기적적인 것이 아무 것도 없습니다. 우리가 설명할 수 있는 것을 우리는 명령하기 때문에 설명하려고 시도하는 것은 당연합니다. 순종하는 것이 당연한 것이 아닙니다. 그러므로 불순종하는 것이 반드시 죄가 되는 것도 아닙니다. 지시하는 사람에게 더 높은 권위가 인정되지 아니하는 경우에는 순종할 도덕적 가치가 없습니다. 그가 순종하지 않는다면 다른 사람의 종으로 해방되는 것이 가능합니다. 어떤 사람이 다른 사람에게 “당신이 반드시,” 그리고 “당신이 마땅히.”라고 말한다면 그는 사람의 영혼을 파괴하여 하나님의 은혜를 받을 자격을 박탈하는 것에 다름 아닙니다. 거룩한 하나님을 인정함으로써 순종하는 것이 아니라면 사람은 순종 그 자체를 위한 노예에 불과합니다. 종교적인 틀을 벗어 던질 때 많은 영혼이 하나님께로 나오기 시작합니다. 왜냐하면 사람의 마음의 주인은 종교가 아니고 신성과 인성을 동시에 갖춘 인격체 예수 그리스도 한 분 주님밖에 없기 때문입니다. 그러나 내가 주님을 만날 때 내가 순종하지 않겠다고 말한다면 내게 화가 임합니다. 주님께서는 내가 순종하도록 결코 강요하지 않으실 것입니다. 그렇지만 나의 영혼 속에 하나님의 독생자의 사망 증명서에 내가 서명하기 시작했습니다. 예수 그리스도를 만나서 순종하지 않겠다고 내가 말할 때 주님께서는 결코 강요하지 않으실 것입니다. 그러나 주님의 구속의 은혜로 말미암은 새로운 본성을 재창조하는 능력으로부터 내가 뒤로 물러서고 있는 것입니다. 하나님의 은혜로 믿음을 갖게 되어 구원은 받았지만 내가 아직도 혐오스런 존재인 것은 구원이 완성 되기까지는 죄성이 그대로 남아있기 때문이므로 구원 받았을 때 받은 하나님의 은혜와는 상관 없이, 말씀과 기도로 거룩하여지는 성화의 과정을 거쳐 구원의 완성을 이루어야 하는 것이므로 내가 빛으로 나올 때 베풀어주시는 성령 하나님의 은혜가 계속해서 필요한 것입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 내가 빛을 거부하면 내게 화가 임합니다(요한복음 3:19-21 참조).

 

   “자! 이러한 것들은 주님의 여러 가지 방법들의 한계일 뿐입니다.

그러나 주님의 능력의 위대함을 누가 이해할 수 있습니까?” 정처

없이 떠도는 수 많은 상념들이 내 영혼의 주위를 떠돕니다.

주님께서 내 어둠을 밝히실 때까지는 내게는 지혜도 없고 주님에

관한 사항들을 내가 이해할 수도 없습니다.
