AM I CARNALLY MINDED?

“Whereas there is among you jealousy and strife, are ye not

          carnal?”

1 Corinthians 3:3

 

No natural man knows anything about carnality. The flesh lusting against the Spirit that came in at regeneration, and the Spirit lusting against the flesh, produces carnality. “Walk in the Spirit,” says Paul, “and ye shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh”; and carnality will disappear.

Are you contentious, easily troubled about trifles? “Oh, but no one who is a Christian ever is!” Paul says they are, he connects these things with carnality. Is there a truth in the Bible that instantly awakens petulance in you? That is a proof that you are yet carnal. If sanctification is being worked out, there is no trace of that spirit left.

If the Spirit of God detects anything in you that is wrong, He does not ask you to put it right; He asks you to accept the light, and He will put it right. A child of the light confesses instantly and stands bared before God; a child of the darkness says—“Oh, I can explain that away.” When once the light breaks and the conviction of wrong comes, be a child of the light, and confess, and God will deal with what is wrong; if you vindicate yourself, you prove yourself to be a child of the darkness.

What is the proof that carnality has gone? Never deceive yourself; when carnality is gone it is the most real thing imaginable. God will see that you have any number of opportunities to prove to yourself the marvel of His grace. The practical test is the only proof. “Why,” you say, “if this had happened before, there would have been the spirit of resentment!” You will never cease to be the most amazed person on earth at what God has done for you on the inside.

 

   O Lord, how wonderful are Thy ways! When I recall the way Thou hast

led me and borne with me, I am lost in wonder, love and praise.

“너희 가운데 시기와 분쟁이 있으니 너희는 육신에 속한

           자가 아닌가?”

고린도전서 3:3

 

자연인은 육욕에 대해 아무것도 모릅니다. 거듭날 때 들어온 성령과 육체를 대항하는 성령을 거스르는 육체가 육욕을 생산합니다. “성령을 따라 행하라 그리하면 너희가 육체의 욕심을 이루지 아니하리라”(갈 5:16)고 바울이 말합니다.

당신은 사소한 것들로 인해 쉽사리 짜증을 내고 다투기를 잘합니까? “오오, 크리스천은 아무도 그렇지 않습니다!” 바울은 크리스천들이 다투기를 잘한다고 말하고 그 원인을 육체의 욕망과 연결시킵니다. 당신 안에 참지 못하고 발끈하는 성질을 즉시 불러일으키는 어떤 진리가 성경 안에 있습니까? 그것은 당신이 아직도 육체의 욕망에 따라 산다는 증거입니다. 만약 성화의 효력이 나타나고 있으면 그러한 영의 흔적은 남아 있지 아니 합니다.

만약 당신 안에서 잘못된 무엇인가를 성령께서 찾아내시면 성령께서 그것을 바로 잡으라고 당신에서 요구하지 않으십니다. 빛을 받아들이라고 당신에게 요구하십니다. 그러면 주님이 그것을 바로잡습니다. 빛의 자녀는 즉시 잘못을 고백하고 적나라한 모습으로 하나님 앞에 섭니다. 어둠의 자녀는 “오오, 제가 그것을 잘 해명할 수 있습니다.”라고 말합니다. 일단 빛이 침투해 들어와 잘못한 것에 대한 양심의 가책이 생기면 빛의 자녀가 되어 고백하십시오. 그러면 하나님께서 잘못된 것을 다루어 주실 것입니다. 당신이 만약 자신을 변명한다면 당신이 어둠의 자녀임을 스스로 입증하는 것입니다.

육욕이 사라졌다는 증거가 무엇입니까? 결코 자신을 속이지 마십시오. 육욕이 사라질 때 그것은 상상할 수 있는 가장 실감나는 일입니다. 주님의 놀라운 경이적인 은총을 자신에게 당신이 입증하는 몇몇 기회가 있음을 하나님께서 알게 되실 것입니다. 실제적인 테스트가 유일한 증거입니다. “아니, 만일 이런 일이 전에 발생했었다면 영이 분개하는 일은 없었을 텐데!” 내부에서 당신에게 베푸신 하나님의 은총에 당신이 지구상에서 가장 놀라는 사람으로 끊임없이 살아갈 것입니다.

 

    오오 주님, 주님의 방법들은 얼마나 놀라운지요! 주님께서 저를

인도하시고 참으시고 제 기도를 들어주신 방법을 제가 상기할 때

제가 경탄과 사랑과 찬양에 취해있습니다.
