GRASP WITHOUT REACH

“Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint.”

Proverbs 29:18 (R.V.)

 

There is a difference between an ideal and a vision. An ideal has no moral inspiration; a vision has. The people who give themselves over to ideals rarely do anything. A man’s conception of Deity may be used to justify his deliberate neglect of his duty. Jonah argued that because God was a God of justice and of mercy, therefore everything would be all right. I may have a right conception of God, and that may be the very reason why I do not do my duty. But wherever there is vision, there is also a life of rectitude because the vision imparts moral incentive.

Ideals may lull to ruin. Take stock of yourself spiritually and see whether you have ideals only or if you have vision.

Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp,

Or what’s a heaven for?

“Where there is no vision . . . .” When once we lose sight of God, we begin to be reckless, we cast off certain restraints, we cast off praying, we cast off the vision of God in little things, and begin to act on our own initiative. If we are eating what we have out of our own hand, doing things on our own initiative without expecting God to come in, we are on the downward path, we have lost the vision. Is our attitude to-day an attitude that springs from our vision of God? Are we expecting God to do greater things than He has ever done? Is there a freshness and vigour in our spiritual outlook.

 

     O Lord, in some moods it seems so easy to slip away from Thee and

Thy purposes, and yet, Lord, I do not believe it is; but I do believe it

is possible to enter into Thy purposes like a beast of the field, with no

discernment and no vision. Lord, I would be a son of Thine.

이상에 미치지 못하는 현실

“묵시가 없으면 백성이 방자히 행하거니와.”

잠언 29:18

 

이상과 비전(묵시)는 차이가 있습니다. 이상에는 도덕적 영감이 없고 비전에는 도덕적 영감이 있습니다. 이상에 빠진 사람들은 어떤 일을 거의 하지 않습니다. 신성(神性)에 관한 인간의 관념이 자신의 의무를 고의적으로 무시하는 것을 정당화하는데 사용될 수 있습니다. 요나 선지자는 하나님은 정의와 자비의 하나님이기 때문에 모든 것이 잘 될 것이라고 주장했습니다. 내가 하나님에 대해 올바른 생각을 가질 수 있습니다. 그래서 그것이 내가 나의 의무를 다하지 않는 이유가 될 수 있습니다. 그러나 비전이 있는 곳은 어디서든지 비전이 도덕적 동기를 부여하므로 성실한 생명 또한 존재합니다.

이상은 파멸로 가라앉을지도 모릅니다. 여러분 자신의 영적 상태의 품질을 조사하여 여러분이 이상만 갖고 있는지 그렇지 않으면 비전을 갖고 있는지 확인하십시오.

   아아, 인간이 추구하는 이상을 현실이 따라가지 못하는 것은 당연합니다.

   그렇지 않으면 하늘나라가 무슨 소용이 있습니까?

“비전이 없는 곳에서…” 우리가 일단 하나님을 바라보지 않게 될 때 우리는 갈팡질팡하기 시작하고 특정한 자제력을 잃고 기도를 그만두고 사소한 일들로 인해 하나님의 비전을 버리고 우리 자신의 주도권에 따라 행동하기 시작합니다. 우리가 만일 하나님께서 개입하시기를 기대하지 않고 우리 주도권에 따라 일을 처리하면서 일용할 양식을 우리 손으로 해결하고 있다면 우리는 내리막길로 접어들어 비전을 잃어버렸습니다. 오늘 우리의 태도가 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 비전으로부터 샘솟는 태도입니까? 우리는 주님께서 지금까지 이루셨던 것보다 더 훌륭한 일들을 하실 것이라고 하나님께 기대하고 있습니까? 우리의 영적 전망 속에 새로움과 활기가 있습니까?

 

    오오 주님, 어던 분위기에서는 주님과 주님의 목적으로부터 살짝

달아나는 것이 아주 용이하다고 생각됩니다. 그런데도 여전히, 주님,

저는 그렇다고 믿지 않습니다. 그러나 분별력도 비전도 없이

들판의 짐승처럼 주님의 목적 안으로 들어가는 것이 가능하다고

저는 믿습니다. 주님, 저는 주님의 아들이 되려고 합니다.
