THE MIRACLE OF BELIEF

“My speech and my preaching was not with enticing words.”

1 Corinthians 2:1-5

 

Paul was a scholar and an orator of the first rank; he is not speaking out of abject humility, but saying that he would veil the power of God if when he preached the gospel, he impressed people with his “excellency of speech.” Belief in Jesus is a miracle produced only by the efficacy of Redemption, not by impressiveness of speech, not by wooing and winning, but by the sheer unaided power of God. The creative power of the Redemption comes through the preaching of the Gospel, but never because of the personality of the preacher. The real fasting of the preacher is not from food, but rather from eloquence, from impressiveness and exquisite diction, from everything that might hinder the gospel of God being presented. The preacher is there as the representative of God—“as though God did beseech you by us.” He is there to present the Gospel of God. If it is only because of my preaching that people desire to be better, they will never get anywhere near Jesus Christ. Anything that flatters me in my preaching of the Gospel will end in making me a traitor to Jesus; I prevent the creative power of His redemption from doing its work.

“I, if I be lifted up . . ., will draw all men unto Me.”

 

   O Lord, how complete is my need of Thee! To Thee I come, give

me a gracious renewing of Thy life till my reasoning powers,

my imagination, and my speaking are all of Thee. I seek Thy touch

and thrilling grace today.

믿음의 기적

“내 말과 내 전도함이 설득력 있는 지혜의 말로 하지 아니하고.”

고린도전서 2:4

 

바울은 최고의 학자요 웅변가였습니다. 바울은 비굴한 겸손에서 이야기하고 있는 것이 아니고 그가 복음을 전도했을 때 그의 뛰어난 언변으로 사람들을 감동시킨다면 하나님의 능력을 가릴 것이기에 그렇게 말하고 있는 것입니다. 예수님에 대한 믿음은 구속의 효능에 의해서만 산출되는 기적으로서 언변의 감동, 설득 및 명성의 획득을 통해서가 아니고 아무런 도움을 받지 않는 하나님 자신의 순전한 능력을 통해서 발생되는 기적입니다. 구속의 창조적 능력은 복음의 설교를 통해서 발생하는 것이지, 설교자의 인격 때문에 발생하는 것이 절대 아닙니다. 설교자의 진정한 단식은 음식으로부터 출발하는 것이 아니고 오히려 하나님을 감동시키는 기도의 능력, 장엄함과 귀중한 말씨, 제시되고 있는 하나님의 복음을 방해할지도 모르는 모든 것으로부터 출발하는 것입니다. 설교자는 “마치 하나님께서 우리를 통해 너희를 권면하셨던 것처럼.” 하나님의 대표로 거기에 존재하는 것입니다. 설교자는 하나님의 복음을 발표하기 위해 그곳에 존재하는 것입니다. 사람들이 더 나아지기를 소망하는 이유가 나의 설교 때문만이라면 그들은 어디에서도 예수 그리스도 가까이 가지 않을 것입니다. 나의 복음 설교에 있어서 나를 칭찬하는 어떤 것도 결국 나를 예수님에 대한 반역자로 만들고 말 것입니다. 주님의 구속의 창조적 능력이 역사하지 못하도록 내가 방해하는 것입니다.

“내가 땅에서 들리면 모든 사람을 내게로 이끌겠노라.”(요한복음 12:32)

 

   오오 주님, 제가 주님을 필요로 하는 열망이 얼마나 대단한지요!

  주님에게 제가 나아옵니다. 저의 추리능력, 저의 상상력, 그리고 저의

  말하기 모두가 주님의 것이 되기까지 새롭게 하는 은혜로운 주님의

 생명을 제게 주시옵소서. 제가 오늘 주님의 만져주심과 감동적인 은혜를

 구합니다.
