THE ACCOUNT WITH PURITY

“Out of the heart proceed. . .”

Matthew 15:18-20

 

We begin by trusting our ignorance and calling it innocence, by trusting our innocence and calling it purity; and when we hear these rugged statements of Our Lord’s, we shrink and say—But I never felt any of those awful things in my heart. We resent what Jesus Christ reveals. Either Jesus Christ is the supreme Authority on the human heart, or He is not worth paying any attention to. Am I prepared to trust His penetration, or do I prefer to trust my innocent ignorance? If I make conscious innocence the test, I am likely to come to a place where I find with a shuddering awakening that what Jesus Christ said is true, and I shall be appalled at the possibility of evil and wrong in me. As long as I remain under the refuge of innocence, I am living in a fool’s paradise. If I have never been a black-guard, the reason is a mixture of cowardice and the protection of civilized life; but when I am undressed before God, I find that Jesus Christ is right in His diagnosis.

The only thing that safeguards is the Redemption of Jesus Christ. If I will hand myself over to Him, I need never experience the terrible possibilities that are in my heart. Purity is too deep down for me to get to naturally: but when the Holy Spirit comes in, He brings into the center of my personal life the very Spirit that was manifested in the life of Jesus Christ, viz., Holy Spirit, which is unsullied purity.

 

O my God, I lie in Thy fire burning and purifying—so much dross

I seem to discover today, so little of Thy sweet and lovely grace

in my dealing with others’ faults. Lord, forgive me.

청결에 대한 판단

“마음에서 나오나니…”

마태복음 15:18-20

 

우리의 무지를 신뢰하여 그 무지를 순진한 것으로 부르며 우리의 순진을 신뢰하여 그 순진을 청결로 부름으로써 우리가 시작합니다. 우리 주님의 혹독한 이런 말씀들을 들을 때 우리는 움츠러들어 ‘그렇지만 나는 그런 무서운 것들을 내 마음 속에서 결코 느끼지 않았습니다.’라고 말합니다. 예수 그리스도께서 드러내 보이시는 것을 우리는 화냅니다. 예수 그리스도께서는 인간의 마음에 관해 최고의 권위를 가진 분이시거나 그러한 문제에 대해 주목할만한 가치가 없는 분이시거나 둘 중 하나의 경우입니다. 나는 주님의 개입을 신뢰할 준비가 되어있는가, 그렇지 않으면 나의 순진한 무지를 신뢰하기로 선호하는가? 내가 만약 의식적인 순진을 테스트하기로 선택한다면 예수 그리스도께서 이르신 말씀이 옳다는 것을 내가 두려워 떨며 깨닫게 되기 쉽고 내 안에 있는 악과 허물의 가능성을 보고 내가 놀라게 될 것입니다. 순진이라는 피난처 아래 머물고 있는 한 나는 바보의 낙원에서 살고 있는 것입니다. 내가 절대로 불한당이 아니었다면 그 이유는 비겁함과 문명화된 삶의 혼합 탓입니다. 그러나 내가 하나님 앞에 발가벗겨질 때 예수 그리스도의 진단이 옳다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다.

보호해주는 유일한 것은 예수 그리스도의 구속입니다. 내가 만약 내 자아를 장차 주님에게 맡긴다면 내 마음 안에 있는 무서운 가능성들을 체험할 필요가 절대로 없습니다. 청결은 너무 심오한 것이라서 내가 자연스럽게 도달할 수 없습니다. 그러나 성령께서 내게 들어와 역사하실 때, 예수 그리스도의 생애에서 드러나셨던 바로 그 영 즉, 더럽혀지지 않은 청결의 성령을 나의 인격적 생명의 중심에 부어주십니다.

 

오오 나의 하나님, 오늘 제가 발견한 많은 찌꺼기, 주님의 달콤하고

사랑이 넘치는 은혜는 무시하고 다른 사람들이 잘못한 것들을 제가

다루었던 것을 태워 정화시키기 위해 주님의 불 가운데 제가 누워

있습니다. 주님, 용서하여주시옵소서.
