SIGNS OF THE NEW BIRTH

“Ye must be born again.”

                                           John 3:7

The answer to the question “How can a man be born when he is old?” is—When he is old enough to die—to die right out to his “rag rights,” to his virtues, to everything, and to receive into himself the life which never was there before. The new life manifests itself in conscious repentance and unconscious holiness.

“As many as received Him.” (John 1:12.) Is my knowledge of Jesus born of internal spiritual perception, or is it only what I have learned by listening to others? Have I something in my life that connects me with the Lord Jesus as my personal Saviour? All spiritual history must have a personal knowledge for its bedrock. To be born again means that I see Jesus.

“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3.) Do I seek for signs of the Kingdom, or do I perceive God’s rule? The new birth gives a new power of vision whereby I begin to discern God’s rule. His rule was there all the time, but true to His nature; now that I have received His nature I can see His rule.

“Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin”

(1 John 3:9). Do I seek to stop sinning or have I stopped sinning? To be born of God means that I have the supernatural power of God to stop sinning. In the Bible it is never—Should a Christian sin? The Bible puts it emphatically—A Christian must not sin. The effective working of the new birth life in us is that we do not commit sin, not merely that we have the power not to sin, but that we have stopped sinning. First John 3:9 does not mean that we cannot sin; it means that if we obey the life of God in us, we need not sin.

 

Lord, I seem to be brooded over by Thee—and what will be

the result? Keep me watching and waiting at Thy threshold.

새로운 탄생의 표적

“너희는 거듭나야 한다.”

                                                                      요한복음 3:7

 

“사람이 늙었을 때 어떻게 태어날 수 있습니까?”라는 질문에 대한 답변은, 그가 죽을만한 나이로 늙을 때, 그의 “넝마 권리들”, 그의 미덕, 모든 것에 대해서 솔직하게 죽고 예전에 없었던 새 생명을 그 자신 안에 받아들임으로써 거듭난다는 것이 그 답변입니다. 새 생명은 의식적인 회개와 무의식적인 거룩함으로 나타납니다.

“그를 영접한 많은 사람들”(요 1:12). 예수님에 관한 나의 지식은 내부의 정신적인 인식에서 생성됩니까, 그렇지 않으면 다른 사람들의 얘기를 들어서 배운 것을 통해서만 생성됩니까? 내 개인의 구주로서 주 예수님에게 나를 연결시키는 뭔가가 내 생명 안에 있습니까? 모든 영적 역사는 영의 기본 원리에 대한 개인적 지식을 갖고 있어야 합니다. 거듭난다는 것은 내가 예수님을 알게 되었다는 것을 의미합니다.

“사람이 거듭나지 아니하면 하나님의 나라를 볼 수 없느니라”(요 3:31). 내가 천국의 표적들을 구합니까, 그렇지 않으면 하나님의 지배를 내가 알아챕니까? 새 생명은 비전에 대한 새로운 능력을 주는데 그로써 나는 하나님의 지배를 분별하기 시작합니다. 하나님의 지배는 항상 존재했습니다, 그러나 하나님의 본성에 충실한 사람들에게만 적용되는 것입니다. 내가 이제 하나님의 본성을 받았으니 나도 하나님의 지배를 알 수 있습니다.

“하나님으로부터 난 자마다 죄를 짓지 아니한다”(요한1서 3:9). 내가 죄짓는 것을 그만두도록 현재 추구하고 있는가 또는 죄짓는 것을 이미 중단했는가? 하나님에게서 태어난다는 것은 죄짓는 것을 중단하는 하나님의 초자연적 능력을 내가 갖고 있다는 것을 의미합니다. 성경에서 크리스천이 죄를 지어도 되는가? 라는 표현은 결코 없고 크리스천은 죄를 지어서는 안 된다고 성경이 강력하게 주장합니다. 우리 안에서 새로운 탄생의 효과적인 역사는 우리가 죄를 범하지 않는 것인데, 단지 죄짓지 않는 능력을 보유하고 있음을 말하는 것이 아니라 죄짓는 것을 이미 그만둔 것을 의미하는 것입니다. 요한1서 3장 9절 말씀은 죄짓는 능력이 우리에게 없다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 만약 우리가 우리 안에 있는 하나님의 생명에 순종하면 우리가 죄 지을 필요가 없다는 것을 의미하는 것입니다.

 

주님, 주님께서 저를 곰곰이 생각하시는 것처럼 보입니다, 그런데

결과가 무엇일까요? 제가 주님이 들어오시는 문지방을 계속 지켜보며

기다리게 하옵소서.
