ARE YOU DISCOURAGED IN DEVOTION?

“Yet lackest thou one thing; sell all that thou hast. . . and

                                 come, follow Me.”

                                    Luke 18:22

“And when he heard this. . .” Have you ever heard the Master say a hard word? If you have not, I question whether you have heard Him say anything. Jesus Christ says a great deal that we listen to, but do not hear; when we do hear, His words are amazingly hard.

Jesus did not seem in the least solicitous that this man should do what He told him, He made no attempt to keep him with Him. He simply said—Sell all you have, and come, follow Me. Our Lord never pleaded, He never cajoled, He never entrapped; He simply spoke the sternest words mortal ears ever listened to, and then left it alone.

Have I ever heard Jesus say a hard word? Has He said something personally to me to which I have deliberately listened? Not something I can expound or say this and that about, but something I have heard Him say to me? This man did understand what Jesus said, he heard it and he sized up what it meant, and it broke his heart. He did not go away defiant; he went away sorrowful, thoroughly discouraged. He had come to Jesus full of the fire of earnest desire, and the word of Jesus simply froze him; instead of producing an enthusiastic devotion, it produced a heart-breaking discouragement. And Jesus did not go after him, He let him go. Our Lord knows perfectly that when once His word is heard, it will bear fruit sooner or later. The terrible thing is that some of us prevent it bearing fruit in actual life. I wonder what we will say when we do make up our minds to be devoted to Him on that particular point? one thing is certain, He will never cast anything up at us.

 

O Lord, I thank Thee for the fullness of tone and health Thou does

give us these days. Continue it, O Lord. Save from all false emotion

and sentimentality and sadness, and with vigour and gladness bless

each one of us this day.

헌신 중에 낙심됩니까?

“네게 아직도 한 가지 부족한 것이 있으니 네게 있는 것을

                                   다 팔아…그리고 와서 나를 따르라.”

                                      누가복음 18:22

 

“그런데 그 사람이 이 말을 듣고…” 당신은 주님께서 심한 말씀을 하시는 걸 들은 적이 있습니까? 만약 그런 일이 없다면, 주님께서 무엇이든지 말씀하시는 것을 들은 적이 있는지 내가 묻습니다. 예수 그리스도께서 우리가 들을 많은 것을 말씀하시지만 듣지 않습니다. 우리가 들을 때 주님의 말씀들은 놀라우리만치 어려워 수월하게 할 수 없는 내용들입니다.

예수님께서 말씀하신 것을 이 사람이 해야 한다고 조금도 갈망하지 않았던 것처럼 보였습니다. 주님께서 그를 함께 있게 하려는 시도를 전혀 하지 않으셨습니다. ‘네게 있는 것을 다 팔고 와서 나를 따르라’ 라고 알기 쉽게 주님께서 이르셨습니다. 우리 주님께서는 결코 간청하지 않으시고, 속이지 않으시고, 함정에 빠뜨리지 않으셨습니다. 인간의 귀로 들은 중에 가장 어려운 말씀을 주님께서 간단히 이르신 다음 그걸 내버려 두시고 더 이상 간섭하지 않으셨습니다.

예수님께서 어려운 말씀을 이르시는 것을 내가 들었습니까? 내가 신중하게 들은 무언가를 주님께서 내게 직접 이르셨습니까? 내가 이것이다 저것이다 설명하거나 말할 수 있는 무언가가 아니고 주님께서 내게 직접 이르시는 무언가를 내가 들었습니까? 이 사람은 주님께서 이르신 내용을 이해했습니다. 그가 직접 들었고 그 의미하는 바를 판단한 결과 슬픔에 잠기게 되었습니다. 그는 무시하는 태도로 떠나지 않았습니다. 슬픔에 잠겨 완전히 낙심하여 떠났습니다. 그는 진지한 열망의 불로 충만하여 예수님을 만나러 왔었습니다. 그런데 예수님의 말씀만으로 간단히 그의 마음이 얼어붙게 되었습니다. 열광적인 헌신을 야기하지 못하고 마음을 찢는 낙심을 불러 일으켰습니다. 그리고 예수님께서는 그를 좇아가지 않으시고 그가 가도록 놔두셨습니다. 우리 주님께서는 그분의 말씀이 일단 전파되면 조만간 열매를 맺을 것임을 철저하게 알고 계십니다. 두려운 것은 일상생활에서 열매를 맺지 못하도록 방해하는 사람이 우리 중에 있다는 사실입니다. 그 특별한 요점에 따라 주님께 헌신하기로 우리가 결심할 때 우리가 무슨 말을 하게 될지 나는 놀랄 뿐입니다. 한 가지 확실한 것은 주님께서는 무엇이든지 우리에게 억지로 떠맡기지 않으실 것이라는 점입니다. 

 

오오 주님, 요즘 주님께서 우리에게 주시는 기분과 건강의 충만함

때문에 제가 주님께 감사 드립니다. 오오 주님, 그 상태가 계속되도록

은혜 베풀어 주시옵소서. 모든 잘못된 정서와 감정적 언동으로부터

구원해주시고, 오늘 활력과 즐거움으로 우리 각자를 축복해주시옵소서.
