PRAYER CHOICE AND PRAYER CONFLICT

“When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and pray to

                                 thy Father which is in secret.”

                                            Matthew 6:6

 

Jesus did not say—Dream about thy Father in secret, but pray to thy Father in secret. Prayer is an effort of the will. After we have entered our secret place and have shut the door, the most difficult thing to do is to pray; We cannot get our minds into working order, and the first thing that conflicts is wandering thoughts. The great battle in private prayer is the overcoming of mental wool-gathering. We have to discipline our minds and concentrate on wilful prayer.

We must have a selected place for prayer and when we get there the plague of flies begins—This must be done, and that. “Shut thy door.” A secret silence means to shut the door deliberately on emotions and remember God. God is in secret, and He sees us from the secret place; He does not see us as other people see us, or as we see ourselves. When we live in the secret place it becomes impossible for us to doubt God, we become more sure of Him than of anything else. Your Father, Jesus says, is in secret and nowhere else. Enter the secret place, and right in the centre of the common round you find God there all the time. Get into the habit of dealing with God about everything. Unless in the first waking moment of the day you learn to fling the door wide back and let God in, you will work on a wrong level all day; but swing the door wide open and pray to your Father in secret, and every public thing will be stamped with the presence of God.

 

O Lord, how excellent it is to commune with Thee in the early

morning hours. Enable me by patience to reproduce these

exalted moments of calm into the activities of the day.

기도 선택과 기도 충돌

“너는 기도할 때 네 골방에 들어가…은밀한 중에

                                  보시는 네 아버지께 기도하라.”

                                                      마태복음 6:6

 

예수님께서는 은밀한 중에 보시는 네 아버지 대해서 꿈꾸라고 이르시지 않았습니다. 그러나 은밀한 중에 보시는 네 아버지께 기도하라. 기도는 의지의 노력입니다. 우리가 은밀한 장소에 들어가서 문을 닫은 후에 가장 어려운 일은 기도하는 것입니다. 우리가 마음을 순조로운 상태로 정돈할 수 없어 첫 번째로 충돌하는 것은 종잡을 수 없는 생각들입니다. 개인 기도에 있어서 큰 싸움은 정신적인 부질없는 공상을 극복하는 것입니다. 우리 마음을 훈련하여 계획적인 기도에 집중해야 합니다.

우리에겐 선택된 기도장소가 있어야 하며 그곳에 우리가 도착할 때 파리떼의 재앙이 시작됩니다. 이것도 해야 되고 저것도 해야 되고 갈피를 못 잡습니다. “너희 문을 닫아라.” 비밀스런 침묵이 감정들에 대해서 조심스럽게 문을 닫고 하나님을 기억하고자 합니다. 하나님께서 은밀히 계셔 은밀한 장소로부터 우리를 지켜보십니다. 하나님께서는 다른 사람들이 우리를 보듯이, 우리가 우리 자신을 보듯이 보지 않으십니다. 우리가 은밀한 장소에서 생활할 때 우리가 하나님을 의심하는 것은 불가능하게 됩니다. 다른 무엇인가에 대해서 보다 주님에 대해서 더 우리가 확신하게 됩니다. 너희 아버지께서는 다른 어디에도 안 계시고 은밀한 중에 편재하신다고 예수님께서 이르십니다. 은밀한 장소로 들어가세요. 그러면 평범한 원형의 한 가운데서 하나님의 임재를 당신이 항상 깨닫게 됩니다. 모든 것에 관해서 하나님과 함께 다루는 습관을 들이세요. 하루의 처음 눈뜨는 순간에 문을 뒤로 넓게 열어젖히고 하나님을 영접할 줄을 모르면 당신은 하루 종일 잘못된 방향에 따라 일할 것입니다. 문을 활짝 열어젖히고 은밀한 중에 보시는 당신의 아버지에게 기도하세요. 그리하면 공적인 모든 것에 하나님 임재의 증거가 나타날 것입니다.

 

오오 주님, 새벽 시간에 주님과 영감을 나누는 것이 얼마나 뛰어난

일인지요. 인내를 통해 이러한 고귀한 고요의 순간들을 그날의 활동

속으로 재생할 수 있게 하옵소서.
