THE SECRET OF SPIRITUAL COHERENCE

 

“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our

                 Lord Jesus Christ.”

                                                                                                                        Galatians 6:14

 

   When a man is first born again, he becomes incoherent, there is an amount of unrelated emotion about him, unrelated phases of external things. In the apostle of Paul there was a strong steady coherence underneath, consequently he could let his external life change as it liked and it did not distress him because he was rooted and grounded in God. Most of us are not spiritually coherent because we are more concerned about being coherent externally. Paul lived in the basement; the coherent critics live in the upper storey of the external statement of things, and the two do not begin to touch each other. Paul’s consistency was down in the fundamentals. The great basis of his coherence was the agony of God in the redemption of the world, viz., the Cross of Jesus Christ.

   Re-state to yourself what you believe, then do away with as much of it as possible, get back to the bedrock of the Cross of Christ. In external history the Cross is an infinitesimal thing; from the Bible point of view it is of more importance than all the empires of the world. If we get away from brooding on the tragedy of God upon the Cross in our preaching, it produces nothing. It does not convey the energy of God to man; it may be interesting but it has no power. But preach the Cross, and the energy of God is let loose. “It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” “We preach Christ crucified.”

 

   Lord, I seem to drift around, just living dimly before Thee until

Thee dost spring up within me. I adore Thee that I have faith in

Thy mighty redemption, but Oh, it makes such a difference to

realize Thy touch!

영적 일관성의 비결

 

“그러나 내게는 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 십자가 외에 결코

                  자랑할 것이 없으니.”

                                                                                                 갈라디아서 6:14

 

사람이 처음으로 거듭날 때는 일관성이 없고 그와 관련 없는 감정도 발생하고,  외적 사물의 관련 없는 상태도 발생합니다. 사도 바울에게는 강열하고 견고한 일관성이 밑바닥에 깔려있었습니다. 따라서 그의 외적 삶을 마음이 내키는 대로 변하게 내버려두어도 괴롬을 당하지 않았던 것은 그가 하나님에게 근거를 두고 깊이 뿌리를 박고 있었기 때문에 가능했던 것입니다. 우리들 대부분은 외적으로 일관성을 유지하는데 더 관심을 갖고 있기 때문에 영적으로는 일관성이 없습니다. 바울은 지하층에서 살았습니다. 일관성을 가진 비판자들은 사물의 외적 진술의 상층부에서 생활을 합니다. 이 두 계층은 서로 접촉하지 않습니다. 바울의 일관성은 근본적인 것의 밑바닥에 있었습니다. 그의 일관성의 위대한 기초는 세상의 구속(救贖), 즉 예수 그리스도의 십자가라는 하나님의 고통이었습니다.

당신이 믿는 것을 당신 자신에게 다시 말해보십시오. 그런 다음 그 중에서 될 수 있으면 많이 내버리고 그리스도의 십자가의 기본 원리로 돌아가십시오. 역사의 외면적인 측면에서 보면 십자가는 미미한 것입니다. 그러나 성경의 관점에서 보면 세상의 모든 제국보다 더 중요합니다. 우리의 설교에 있어서 십자가를 근거로 하는 하나님의 비극을 곰곰이 생각하는 것으로부터 벗어나면 아무런 소득이 없습니다. 그러한 설교는 하나님의 에너지를 사람에게 전달하지 못합니다. 그런 설교는 흥미로울지는 모르지만 능력은 없습니다. 그러나 십자가를 설교하십시오. 그러면 하나님의 에너지가 방출됩니다. “하나님께서 전도의 미련한 것으로 믿는 자들을 구원하시기를 기뻐하셨도다”(고전 1:21). “우리는 십자가에 못 박힌 그리스도를 전합니다.”(고전 1:23)

 

주님, 주님의 생명력이 제 안에서 힘차게 샘솟아 오를 때까지

제가 주님 앞에서 그저 희미하게 살아있을 뿐, 제가 방황하고

있는 것으로 생각합니다. 제가 주님의 권능의 구속을 믿으며

주님을 찬양합니다. 그러나 오, 주님의 기운을 실감하여 체득하는

것은 중대한 변화를 가져옵니다!
