DISCERNMENT OF FAITH

                           “Faith as a grain of mustard seed….”

                                                                                               Matthew 17:20

 

We have the idea that God rewards us for our faith. It may be so in the initial stages, but we do not earn anything by faith; faith brings into right relationship with God and gives God His opportunity. God has frequently to knock the bottom board out of your experience if you are a saint in order to get you into contact with Himself. God wants you to understand that it is a life of faith, not a life of sentimental enjoyment of His blessings. Your earlier life of faith was narrow and intense, settled around a little sun-spot of experience that had as much of sense as of faith in it, full of light and sweetness; then God withdrew His conscious blessings in order to teach you to walk by faith. You are worth far more to Him now than you were in your days of conscious delight and thrilling testimony.

Faith by its very nature must be tried, and the real trial of faith is not that we find it difficult to trust God, but that God’s character has to be cleared in our own minds. Faith in its actual working out has to go through spells of unsyllabled isolation. Never confound the trial of faith with the ordinary discipline of life, much that we call the trial of faith is the inevitable result of being alive. Faith in the Bible is faith in God against everything that contradicts Him—I will remain true to God’s character whatever He may do. “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him”—this is the most sublime utterance of faith in the whole of the Bible.

 

Lord, in my consciousness this morning a crowd of

little actual things press and I bring them straight to

Thy presence. In Thy wisdom, say, “Peace, be still!”,

and may our ordered lives confess the beauty of Thy

peace.

믿음에 대한 통찰

                 “겨자씨 한 알 만큼의 믿음...”

                                                                      마태복음 17:20

 

신자들은 하나님께서 우리의 믿음에 대해 상을 주신다고 생각한다. 믿음의 초기에는 그렇게 될 수 있다. 그러나 믿음으로 우리가 무엇이든지 얻는 것은 아니다. 믿음은 신자들을 하나님과 올바른 관계 속으로 인도함으로써 하나님께서 역사하실 기회를 하나님께 드리는 것이다. 하나님 만나기를 원하는 신자들이라면 하나님께서는 신자들이 삶의 현장에서 겪게 되는 경험의 밑바닥을 흔들어 신자들에게 신호를 보내시는 법이다. 하나님을 만나는 것은 하나님의 축복을 감상적으로 즐기는 삶이 아닌 하나님의 임재를 직접 경험하는 삶이라는 것을 신자들이 이해하기를 하나님께서는 원하신다. 신자들의 초기 신앙생활은 안목이 좁고 열렬했으며, 빛과 달콤함으로 가득 차 있고, 그 안에 믿음이 있다는 느낌과 함께 약간의 장밋빛 체험도 하면서 안정적인 것이었다. 그런 다음 신자들로 하여금 믿음을 실천하도록 가르치기 위해서 하나님께서는 의도적으로 축복들을 거두어버리셨다. 분명하게 느낄 수 있는 환희와 가슴 설레게 하는 간증이 있었던 때보다 지금 주님과 동행하는 현재의 성화된 신자들의 인격이 하나님께는 훨씬 더 가치가 있는 것이다.

 

믿음은 바로 그 본질상 시험을 받고 시련을 거쳐 연단되어야만 한다. 그런데 믿음의 진정한 시험은 하나님을 신뢰하는 것이 어렵다는 것을 신자들이 알게 되는 것이 아니고, 신자들의 마음 속에서 하나님의 성품이 분명하게 이해되어야 한다는 점이다. 믿음을 실천하는 과정에서는 말로 표현할 수 없는 기도와 금식과 같은 고독의 시간들을 통과해야 한다.

믿음의 시련을 일상적인 삶의 훈련과 혼동하지 말라. 대개 신자들이 말하는 믿음의 시련은 영혼육의 존재로서 불가피하게 겪게 되는 세상적 삶의 결과이다. 성경에서 말하는 믿음은 ‘하나님께서 무엇을 하시든지 나는 하나님의 성품에 충실하겠다’고 말함으로써 하나님을 부인하는 모든 것에 대항하여 하나님을 전적으로 믿고 주님만을 바라보고 살겠다는 신앙고백이다. “하나님께서 설사 나를 죽이실지라도 나는 하나님을 신뢰하고 의지하겠다”고 말하는 것이 성경 전체에 대한 가장 숭고한 신앙고백이다.

 

주님, 오늘 아침 제 의식 속에 한 무리의 사소한 실제 상황들이

압박하여 그들을 막 바로 주님 계신 곳으로 가져왔습니다. 주님의

지혜로 “평안을 주노니, 잠잠하라!”고 말씀하시어 우리의 정돈된 삶이

주님이 주신 평화의 아름다움을 간증하게 하옵소서.
