FAITH

“Without faith it is impossible to please Him.”

                                                                       Hebrews 11:6

 

Faith in antagonism to common sense is fanaticism, and common sense in antagonism to faith is rationalism. The life of faith brings the two into a right relation. Common sense is not faith, and faith is not common sense; they stand in the relation of the natural and the spiritual; of impulse and inspiration. Nothing Jesus Christ ever said is common sense, it is revelation sense, and it reaches the shores where common sense fails. Faith must be tried before the reality of faith is actual. “We know that all things work together for good,” then no matter what happens, the alchemy of God’s providence transfigures the ideal faith into actual reality. Faith always works on the personal line, the whole purpose of God being to see that the ideal faith is made real in His children.

For every detail of the common-sense life, there is a revelation fact of God whereby we can prove in practical experience what we believe God to be. Faith is a tremendously active principle which always puts Jesus Christ first—Lord, Thou hast said so and so (e.g., Matthew 6:33), it looks mad, but I am going to venture on Thy word. To turn head faith into a personal possession is a fight always, not sometimes. God brings us into circumstances in order to educate our faith, because the nature of faith is to make its object real. Until we know Jesus, God is a mere abstraction, we cannot have faith in Him; but immediately we hear Jesus say—“He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father,” we have something that is real, and faith is boundless. Faith is the whole man rightly related to God by the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

 

“But now, O God, strengthen Thou my hands”—

Lord, now! Come to me, fill me with Thyself, then

there will be no yearning unsatisfied.

“믿음이 없이는 하나님을 기쁘시게 하지 못한다.”

                                  히브리서 11:6

 

상식에 반대하는 믿음은 광신이고 믿음에 반대하는 상식은 이성주의다. 믿음의 생활은 이 두 개를 올바른 관계 속으로 이끈다. 상식은 믿음이 아니고, 믿음은 상식이 아니다. 그들은 자연적인 것과 초자연적인 것의 관계에 있으며, 충동과 영감의 관계에 있다. 예수 그리스도께서 말씀하신 것은 전혀 상식이 아니고 계시 판단이다. 그러므로 그 계시 판단은 상식이 닿을 수 없는 곳에 도달한다. 믿음의 실체가 현실로 드러나기 전에 믿음이 시험을 받아야 한다. “모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이룬다는 것을 우리는 알고 있다,” 따라서 무엇이 일어나든지 하나님의 섭리의 연금술이 이상에 속하는 믿음을 사실상의 실체로 변모시킨다. 하나님의 목적 전부가 이상에 속한 믿음이 그의 자녀들 안에서 실제가 되도록 확인하는 것이므로 믿음은 항상 인격적인 차원에서 역사한다.

상식적인 삶의 모든 세부사항을 위하여, 우리가 하나님의 살아계심을 믿게 되는 실제적인 체험 속에서 하나님의 실재를 그로써 우리가 입증할 수 있는 하나님의 계시 사실이 존재하는 것이다. ‘주님, 당신께서 무엇무엇을 말씀하셨습니다 (예를 들면, 마6:33), 그것은 미친 짓처럼 보입니다, 그렇지만 제가 당신의 말씀을 믿고 과감히 해볼 작정입니다’라고 말하는 것처럼 믿음은 일의 우선순위에서 항상 예수 그리스도를 첫째로 삼는 굉장히 능동적인 원칙이다. 머리에 있는 믿음을 인격을 지배하는 가치로 전환시키기 위해서는 이따금 그런 것이 아니고 항상 전투와 같은 노력을 필요로 한다. 우리의 믿음을 교육하기 위해서 하나님께서는 우리를 환경 속으로 인도하신다. 왜냐하면 믿음의 본질은 믿음의 대상을 생생한 실제로 만드는 것이기 때문이다. 우리가 예수님을 이해하기까지는 하나님은 단지 하나의 추상적인 존재에 불과하여 그 하나님 아버지를 우리가 믿을 수 없다. 그러나 예수님께서 “나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았거늘”(요 14:9)이라고 말씀하시는 것을 우리가 듣는 즉시 무엇인가 실존하는 것을 우리가 갖게 되고, 믿음은 무한대가 된다. 믿음은 예수 그리스도의 성령의 능력에 의해 하나님과 바른 관계를 맺게 된 전인격이 되는 것이다.

 

“그러나 이제, 오 하나님, 제 손에 강력한 힘을 주시옵소서” 주님,

지금! 제게 임하셔서 주님 자신으로 저를 충만하게 하옵소서, 그런

다음에는 만족 못한 간절한 동경은 없을 것입니다.
