THE LAW AND THE GOSPEL

“For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend

                 in one point, he is guilty of all.”

                                                                                                                    James 2:10

 

   The moral law does not consider us as weak human beings at all, it takes no account our heredity and infirmities, it demands that we be absolutely moral. The moral law never alters, either for the noblest or for the weakest, it is eternally and abidingly the same. The moral law ordained by God does not make itself weak to the weak, it does not palliate our shortcomings, it remains absolute for all time and eternity. If we do not realize this, it is because we are less than alive; immediately we are alive, life becomes a tragedy. “I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.” When we realize this, then the Spirit of God convicts us of sin. Until a man gets there and sees that there is no hope, the Cross of Jesus Christ is a farce to him. Conviction of sin always brings a fearful binding sense of the law, it makes a man hopeless-“sold under sin.” I, a guilty sinner, can never get right with God, it is impossible. There is only one way in which I can get right with God, and that is by the Death of Jesus Christ. I must get rid of the lurking idea that I can ever be right with God because of my obedience-which of us could ever obey God to absolute perfection!

   We only realize the power of the moral law when it comes with an “if.” God never coerces us. In one mood we wish He would make us do the thing, and in another mood we wish He would leave us alone. Whenever God’s will is in the ascendant, all compulsion is gone. When we choose deliberately to obey Him, then He will tax the remotest star and the last grain of sand to assist us with all His almighty power.

 

  

   Lord, I turn implicitly to Thee. Be such an atmosphere

in and around us that we may be those out of whom

the rivers of living water flow.

율법과 복음

 

“누구든지 온 율법을 지키다가 그 하나를 범하면 모두 범한 자가 되나니.”

야고보서 2:10

 

율법은 우리를 연약한 인간으로 조금도 여기지 않습니다. 우리의 유전 형질과 약점을 전혀 고려하지 않고 우리가 전적으로 도덕적 기준에 맞게 행동할 것을 요구합니다. 율법은 절대로 바뀌지 않으며 가장 저명한 사람이든 가장 연약한 사람이든 누구에게나 변함없이 영원히 똑같이 적용됩니다. 하나님에 의하여 정해진 율법은 약한 사람이라고 우유부단하게 대하지 않으며, 우리가 결점이 있다고 정상 참작을 하는 것도 아니고, 언제나 영원토록 절대적입니다. 만일 우리가 이 점을 인식하지 못한다면 우리가 생명력이 가득 찬 상태로 살아 있지 않기 때문입니다. 우리가 살아 있는 즉시 삶은 비극이 됩니다. “전에 율법을 깨닫지 못했을 때에는 내가 살았더니 계명이 이르매 죄는 살아나고 나는 죽었도다.”(롬 7:9) 이 사실을 우리가 깨달을 때 성령께서 우리의 죄를 책망하십니다. 사람이 그 단계에 이르러 희망이 없다는 것을 비로소 깨닫게 되기까지는 예수 그리스도의 십자가 사건은 그에게 하나의 웃음거리입니다.  죄의 가책은 율법의 강제성으로 인한 두려움을 가져오고, “죄 아래에 팔렸도다”(롬 7:14)라는 사실로 그 사람이 희망을 잃게 합니다. 나는 죄인으로서 하나님과 바르게 될 수 없다, 그것은 불가능하다. 내가 하나님과 바르게 될 수 있는 유일한 방법은 바로 예수 그리스도의 죽음을 통해서 입니다. 나는 자신의 순종을 통하여 하나님과 바르게 될 수 있다는 숨은 생각을 쫓아버려야 합니다. 우리들 중 누가 하나님을 완전하게 순종할 수 있겠습니까!

율법이 “만약”이라는 조건적 단어와 함께 올 때 우리는 율법의 권능을 깨달을 뿐입니다. 하나님은 우리를 강요하지 않습니다. 한편으로 우리는 하나님께서 요구하시는 일을 우리에게 강제로 시켰으면 좋겠다고 생각하고, 또 다른 한편으로는 하나님께서 우리를 그냥 내버려두시길 원합니다. 하나님의 뜻이 세력을 가지고 있을 때는 모든 강제는 사라집니다. 우리가 주님께 순종하기로 신중하게 선택할 때, 그 다음에 하나님께서는 주님의 전능하신 능력을 모두 동원하여 우리를 돕기 위해 가장 멀리 있는 별과 마지막 모래알에게도 일을 시키실 것입니다.

 

주님, 제가 주님을 향해 무조건 나아갑니다. 우리가 생수의 강들이

흘러나올 수 있는 근원이 될 수 있도록 돕는 우리 주변환경이

되게 하옵소서.
