INDIVIDUALITY

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself.”

                                                                                                                  Matthew 16:24

                                                  

   Individuality is the husk of the personal life. Individuality is all elbows, it separates and isolates. It is the characteristic of the child and rightly so; but if we mistake individuality for the personal life, we will remain isolated. The shell of individuality is God’s created natural covering for the protection of the personal life; but individuality must go in order that the personal life may come out and brought into fellowship with God. Individuality counterfeits personality as lust counterfeits love. God designed human nature for Himself; individuality debases human nature for itself.

   The characteristics of individuality are independence and self-assertiveness. It is the continual assertion of individuality that hinders our spiritual life more than anything else. If you say-“I cannot believe,” it is because individuality is in the road; individuality never can believe. Personality cannot help believing. Watch yourself when the Spirit of God is at work. He pushes you to the margins of your individuality, and you have either to say-“I shan’t,” or to surrender, to break the husk of individuality and let the personal life emerge. The Holy Spirit narrows it down every time to one thing (cf. Matthew 5:23-24). The thing in you that will not be reconciled to your brother is your individuality. God wants to bring you into union with Himself, but unless you are willing to give up your right to yourself he cannot. “Let him deny himself”-deny his independent right to himself, then the real life has a chance to grow.

 

    O Lord, my Lord and master, may I be so consciously

Thine today that I am at home with Thee, and joyous

in my childlike delight in Thy possession of me.

개성(個性)

“누구든지 나를 따라 오려거든 자기를 부인하게 하라.”

                                                          마태복음 16:24

 

개성은 인격적인 생명의 껍질입니다. 개성은 모두 팔꿈치 입니다. 분리시키고 고립시킵니다. 그것은 어린이의 특징으로서 그렇게 하는 것이 당연합니다. 그러나 만일 우리가 개성을 인격적인 생명과 혼동한다면 우리는 여전히 고립된 채로일 것입니다. 개성이라는 껍질은 인격적인 생명을 보호하기 위해 하나님이 창조하신 천연 덮개입니다. 그러나 인격적인 생명이 밖으로 나와 하나님과 친교를 나누기 위해서는 개성이 제거되어야 합니다. 정욕이 사랑을 가장하듯 개성은 인격적인 생명을 가장합니다. 하나님은 하나님 자신을 위해 인간 본성을 설계하셨습니다. 그러나 개성은 그 자체를 위해 인간 본성의 품위를 떨어뜨립니다.

개성의 특징은 독립심과 자기 주장입니다. 다른 어떤 것보다도 우리의 영적 생활을 방해하는 것은 개성의 끊임없는 독단입니다. 만일 당신이 “나는 믿을 수 없어” 라고 말한다면 이는 개성이 방해하기 때문입니다. 개성은 결코 믿을 수 없습니다 (역자 주: 달리 번역하면 '개성은 결코 신앙을 가질 수 없습니다'). 인격은 믿지 않을 수 없습니다 (역자 주: 달리 번역하면 '인격은 신앙을 갖지 않을 수 없습니다'). 성령이 역사하실 때 조심하십시오. 성령은 당신의 개성의 한계까지 당신을 몰고 가십니다. 이때 “나는 할 수 없어요”라고 말하던지 아니면 성령님께 항복하고, 개성의 껍질을 깨뜨리고 인격적인 생명이 드러나게 해야 됩니다. 성령은 매번 이 한가지 일로 범위를 좁힙니다 (참조, 마 5:23-24). 당신이 당신의 형제와 화해하지 못하게 되는 것은 당신의 개성 때문입니다. 하나님은 당신을 하나님 자신과 연합시키기를 원하십니다. 그러나 만일 당신이 당신 자신에 대한 당신의 권리를 기꺼이 포기하지 않는다면 하나님은 하실 수 없습니다. “그가 자기를 부인하게 하라”는 말은 자기 자신에 대한 주권을 포기하라는 것입니다. 그리고 나서 진정한 삶이 성장하는 기회를 갖게 됩니다. 

 

    오오 주님, 제 주인이신 주님, 제가 오늘 의식적으로 주님의

소유가 되어서 주님과 함께 편안하고 주님이 저를 소유하신

가운데 어린이 같은 유쾌함으로 기뻐하게 하옵소서.
