THE OFFENCE OF THE NATURAL

“And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”

                                                                                                                       Galatians 5:24

                                                  

   The natural life is not sinful; we must be apostatized from sin, have nothing to do with sin in any shape or form. Sin belongs to hell and the devil; I, as a child of God, belong to heaven and God. It is not a question of giving up sin, but of giving up my right to myself, my natural independence and self-assertiveness, and this is where the battle has to be fought. It is the things that are right and noble and good from the natural standpoint that keep us back God’s best. To discern that natural virtues antagonize surrender to God, is to bring our soul into the centre of its greatest battle. Very few of us debate with the sordid and evil and wrong, but we do debate with the good. It is the good that hates the best, and the higher up you get in the scale of the natural virtues, the more intense is the opposition to Jesus Christ. “They that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh”-it is going to cost the natural in you everything, not something. Jesus said-“If any man will be My disciple, let him deny himself.” i.e., his right to himself, and a man has to realize Who Jesus Christ is before he will do it. Beware of refusing to go to the funeral of your own independence.

   The natural life is not spiritual, and it can only be made spiritual by sacrifice. If we do not resolutely sacrifice the natural, the supernatural can never become natural in us. There is no royal road there; each of us has it entirely in his own hands. It is not a question of praying, but of performing.

  

       O Lord, how I realize my need of a worthier conception

of Thyself. All lesser things I would merge in this petition-

that I might worthily magnify Thee.

자연적인 것의 공격

“그리스도 예수의 사람들은 육체와 함께 그 정욕과 탐심을 십자가에 못 박았느니라.”

자연 생활은 죄받을 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 죄로부터 벗어나서 어떤 형태로든지 죄와 관련해서는 안됩니다. 죄는 마귀와 지옥에 속합니다. 나는 하나님의 어린이로서 하나님과 천국에 속한 자입니다. 죄를 포기하는 것의 문제가 아니고 자신에 대한 나의 권리, 즉 나의 천성적인 독립심과 자기 주장을 포기하는 것의 문제입니다. 그리고 이것이 우리의 싸움터입니다. 우리를 하나님의 최선으로 가지 못하도록 방해하는 것은 자연 관점에서 볼 때 옳고 고상하고 좋은 것들입니다. 자연적인 미덕들이 하나님에 대한 굴복에 적대한다는 것을 깨닫는 것이 우리 영혼을 최대 격전지의 중심으로 이끄는 것입니다. 우리 중에 비열하고 악하고 잘못된 것을 가지고 논쟁하는 사람은 거의 없습니다. 그러나 선한 것을 가지고 우리는 논쟁합니다. 최선을 미워하는 것은 좋은 것입니다. 그리고 자연적인 미덕들의 수준에 있어서 당신이 더 높이 오르면 오를수록 예수 그리스도에 대한 반대는 더 격렬합니다. “예수의 사람들은 그 육체를 십자가에 못 박았느니라.” 어떤 부분만이 아니라 당신 안에 있는 자연적인 것들 전부를 희생하게 될 것이다. “누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 그가 자기를 부인하게 하라”고 예수님이 말씀하셨습니다. 여기서 자기 부인이라는 것은 자기에 대한 자신의 권리를 부정하는 것을 뜻하는 것입니다. 그리고 사람은 자기를 부인하기 전에 반드시 예수 그리스도가 어떤 분이신지 알아야 합니다. 당신 자신의 독립을 매장하는 것을 거절하지 않도록 조심하십시오.

자연 생활은 영적이 아닙니다. 자연적인 삶은 오직 희생을 통하여서만 영적으로 될 수 있습니다. 만일 우리가 자연적인 것을 단호히 희생시키지 않으면 초자연적인 것이 우리 안에서 자연적인 것으로 결코 거기에는 왕도가 없습니다. 우리 각자의 손에 완전히 달려 있습니다. 이것은 기도의 문제가 아니라 실천의 문제입니다. 

 

오오 주님, 주님에 대한 더 가치 있는 개념 파악이 저에게

얼마나 필요한지 깨닫습니다. 주님을 훌륭하게 찬미하기 위해서

사소한 모든 것들은 제가 이 기도에 흡수시키고자 합니다.
