WHERE THE BATTLE’S LOST AND WON

“If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the LORD, return unto me:

and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remove.”

 Jeremiah 4:1

 

   The battle is lost or won in the secret places of the will before God, never first in the external world. The spirit of God apprehends me and I am obliged to get alone with God and fight the battle out before Him. Until this is done, I lose every time. The battle may take one minute or a year, that will depend on me, not on God; but it must be wrestled out alone before God, and I must resolutely go through the hell of a renunciation before God. Nothing has any power over the man who has fought out the battle before God and won there.

   If I say, “I will wait till I get into the circumstances and then put God to the test,” I shall find I cannot. I must get the thing settled between myself and God in the secret places of my soul where no stranger intermeddles, and then I can go forth with the certainty that the battle is won. Lose it there, and calamity and disaster and upset are as sure as God’s decree. The reason the battle is not won is because I try to win it in the external world first. Get alone with God, fight it out before Him, settle the matter there once and for all.

   In dealing with other people, the line to take is to push them to an issue of will. That is the way abandonment begins. Every now and again, not often, but sometimes, God brings us to a point of climax. That is the Great Divide in the life; from that point we either go towards a more and more dilatory and useless type of Christian life, or we become more and more ablaze for the glory of God-My Utmost for His Highest.

 

    

 

          It is time, O my God, for a touch from Thee, one of

those great transfiguring touches in which Thou dost

stand out plainly and clearly from all else, brilliant

moments in which I see Thee and worship and wonder.

전쟁에서 지고 이기는 곳

“여호와께서 이르시되 이스라엘아 네가 돌아오려거든 내게로 돌아오라 네가 만일 나의 목전에서 가증한 것을 버리고 네가 흔들리지 아니하며.”

예레미야 4:1

 

전쟁은 처음에 외부 세계에서가 아니라 하나님 앞에서 의지의 비밀 장소에서 그 승패가 판가름 됩니다. 하나님의 영이 나를 사로 잡고 나는 하나님과 홀로 만나서 하나님 앞에서 전쟁을 치러야 합니다. 이 일이 이루어지기까지는 나는 매번 패배합니다. 이 전쟁이 몇 분 또는 몇 년이 걸릴지 하나님에 의해서가 아니고 나에 의해서 좌우될 것입니다. 그러나 그 전쟁은 하나님 앞에서 나 홀로 치르지 않으면 안 되는 것이고, 하나님 앞에서 내가 자기 부인(否認)의 고통을 단호히 통과하지 않으면 안 됩니다. 하나님 앞에서 전쟁을 치르고 거기서 승리한 사람을 억누를 수 있는 능력을 가진 것은 아무 것도 없습니다.

만일 “내가 상황에 처한 다음 하나님을 시험해 볼 때까지 나는 기다리겠다,”라고 내가 말한다면, 내가 승리할 수 없음을 알게 될 것입니다. 아무도 간섭하지 않는 내 영혼의 은밀한 곳에서 나와 하나님 사이에서 내가 문제를 해결해야 합니다. 그런 다음 전쟁에서 승리한다는 확신을 갖고 내가 출발할 수 있습니다. 일단 전쟁에서 지면 하나님의 섭리처럼 틀림없이 재난과 끔찍한 불행과 혼란이 임하게 됩니다. 전쟁에서 이기지 못하는 이유는 내가 처음에 외부 세계에서 싸워 이기려고 노력하기 때문입니다. 하나님과 홀로 만나십시오. 하나님 앞에서 그것과 싸우십시오, 하나님 앞에서 단호하게 이 문제를 해결하십시오.

다른 사람들과 사귐에 있어서는 그들이 의지로 성공할 때까지 힘이 되어 주는 방향을 선택해야 하는 것입니다. 그것이 포기가 시작되는 길입니다. 때때로, 자주는 아니고, 이따금, 하나님은 우리를 절정의 단계까지 데리고 가십니다. 그 곳은 삶의 가장 큰 분기점이 되는 지점입니다. 그 분기점에서 우리는 꾸물대고 쓸모 없는 타입의 크리스천 삶을 향해 전락하던지 그렇지 않으면 ‘주님께 최고의 영광을 돌리기 위해 나의 최선을 다하겠다.’는 식으로 더욱 더 하나님의 영광을 위하여 불타오르게 됩니다.

 

       오오 나의 하나님, 주님과의 접촉이 필요한 시간입니다. 놀랍도록

거룩하게 하는 접촉들 중의 하나로서 주님이 다른 모든 것으로부터

분명히 뚜렷하게 눈에 띄고, 제가 주님을 보고 경배하며 경탄해

마지 않는 빛나는 순간들을 열망하옵니다.
