CONTINUOUS CONVERSION

“And said, verily I say unto you, except ye be converted, and become as little children,

     ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.”

 Matthew 18:3

 

   These words of Our Lord are true of our initial conversation, but we have to be continuously converted all the days of our lives, continually to turn to God as children. If we trust to our wits instead of to God, we produce consequences for which God will hold us responsible. Immediately our bodies are brought into new conditions by the providence of God, we have to see that our natural life obeys the dictates of the Spirit of God. Because we have done it once is no proof that we shall do it again. The relation of the natural to the spiritual is one of continuous conversion, and it is the one thing we object to. In every setting in which we are put, the Spirit of God remains unchanged and His salvation unaltered, but we have to “put on the new man.” God holds us responsible every time for refusing is willful obstinacy. Our natural life must not rule, God must rule in us.

   The hindrance in our spiritual life is that we will not be continually converted, there are wadges of obstinacy where our pride spits at the throne of God and says-I won’t. We deify independence and willfulness and call them by the wrong name. What God looks on as obstinate weakness, we call strength. There are whole tracts of our lives which have not yet been brought into subjection, and it can only be done by this continuous conversion. Slowly but surely we can claim the whole territory for the Spirit of God.

 

            O Lord, that I might be brought into Thy presence,

and see things from Thy standpoint. I have to speak to

Thy people this morning, anoint me afresh, O Lord,

with Thy gracious Spirit.

끊임없는 변화

“이르시되 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 돌이켜 어린 아이들과

                 같이 되지 아니하면 결단코 천국에 들어가지 못하리라.”

마태복음 18:3

 

우리 주님의 이러한 말씀들은 하나님을 믿게 되어 우리가 처음으로 변화될 때 적용됩니다. 그러나 우리가 살아가는 동안 내내 우리는 계속적으로 변화되어야 하고, 어린아이들처럼 끊임없이 하나님에게 도움을 청해야 합니다. 만일 우리가 하나님 대신 우리의 지혜를 따라 살면 우리는 하나님께서 우리에게 책임 지우실   결과들을 초래합니다. 하나님의 섭리에 의하여 우리의 몸이 새로운 조건에 접하게 되면 우리는 우리의 선천적인 생명이 하나님의 성령의 명령에 복종하는지 확인하여야 합니다. 우리가 한번 복종했다고 해서 우리가 다시 한번 복종할 것이라는 증거가 없기 때문입니다. 영적인 것에 대한 선천적인 것의 관계는 계속적인 변화의 관계입니다. 그것은 우리가 목표로 삼아야 하는 한가지입니다. 우리가 처하는 모든 상황에서 하나님의 성령은 변함 없이 여전히 그대로이고 주님의 구원도 변경되지 않습니다. 그러나 우리는 “새사람을 입어야”(엡 4:24) 합니다. 변화를 거절할 때마다 매번 하나님께서 우리에게 책임을 지우시는 것은 우리가 고의적으로 고집을 부리기 때문입니다. 우리의 선천적인 생명이 지배해서는 안되고 우리들 안에 하나님께서 통치하시지 않으면 안 됩니다.

우리의 영적인 삶에 있어서 장애물은 우리가 끊임없이 변화되겠다는 의지가 없다는 점입니다. 우리의 교만(잠 16:18)이 하나님의 보좌를 향하여 침을 뱉고 “나는 하지 않겠어”라고 말하는 곳에 고집 덩어리가 있습니다. 우리는 독립심과 아집을 신격화하고 그것들을 잘못된 이름으로 부릅니다. 하나님께서 완고한 약점으로 보시는 것을 우리는 힘이라고 부릅니다. 우리 삶의 전 영역이 아직도 하나님께 복종하지 않는 것들이 남아 있습니다. 이와 같은 계속적인 변화에 의해서만 복종할 수 있습니다. 천천히 그러나 확실하게 우리는 우리 삶의 전 영역을 하나님의 성령의 활동범위로 요구할 수 있습니다. 

 

       오오 주님, 제가 주님의 임재 속으로 인도되어 주님의 관점에서

사물을 보게 하옵소서. 제가 오늘 아침 주님의 백성들에게 말을

해야 합니다. 오오 주님, 주님의 자비로운 성령으로 저를 새롭게

성별 하여 주시옵소서.
