THE IMPOVERISHED MINISTRY OF JESUS

“From whence then hast Thou that living water?”

 John 4:11

“The well is deep”—and a great deal deeper than the Samaritan woman knew! Think of the depths of human nature, of human life, think of the depths of the “wells” in you. Have you been impoverishing the ministry of Jesus so that He cannot do anything? Suppose there is a well of fathomless trouble inside your heart, and Jesus comes and says-“Let not your heart be troubled”; and you shrug your shoulders and say, “But, Lord, the well is deep; You cannot draw up quietness and comfort out of it.” No, He will bring them down from above. Jesus does not bring anything up from the wells of human nature. We limit the Holy one by remembering what we have allowed Him to do for us in the past, and by saying, “Of course I cannot expect God to do this thing.” The thing that taxes almightiness is the very thing which we as disciples of Jesus ought to believe He will do. We impoverish His ministry the moment we forget He is Almighty. We will come to Jesus as Comforter or as Sympathizer, but we will not come to Him as Almighty.

The reason some of us are such poor specimens of Christianity is because we have no Almighty Christ. We have Christian attributes and experiences, but there is no abandonment to Jesus Christ. When we get into difficult circumstances, we impoverish His ministry by saying-“Of course He cannot do anything,” and we struggle down to the deeps and try to get the water for ourselves. Beware of the satisfaction of sinking back and saying-“It can’t be done”; you know it can be done if you look to Jesus. The well of your incompleteness is deep, but make the effort and look away to Him.

 

   O Lord, what a wonder of perfect confidence it would

create could I but hear some clear disposing word of

Thine! Lord, speak it today.

예수님의 빈곤한 사역

“어디서 그 생수를 얻겠사옵나이까?”

요한복음 4:11

 

“우물은 깊습니다”-성경 속에 나오는 사마리아 여인이 알고 있었던 것보다 훨씬 깊습니다. 인간본성의, 인간생명의 깊이를 생각해보세요, 당신 안에 있는 우물들의 깊이를 생각해보세요. 당신이 예수님의 사역을 빈곤에 빠뜨려왔기 때문에 주님께서 아무 것도 할 수 없는 것이 아닙니까? 당신의 가슴 속에 측량할 수 없는 고통의 샘이 있는데 예수님께서 오셔서 “너희는 마음에 근심하지 말라”(요 14:1)고 이르신다고 가정해보십시오. 그런데 당신은 어깨를 움츠리고 “그렇지만, 주님, 우물이 깊습니다. 당신은 거기서 평온과 위로를 끌어올릴 수 없습니다”라고 말합니다. 아니지요, 주님은 위로부터 그것들을 가져오실 것입니다. 예수님은 인간본성의 샘들로부터 아무것도 가져오지 않습니다. 과거에 주님께서 우리를 위해 무엇을 하시도록 허용한 적이 있었던가를 기억함으로써, 또한 “물론 나는 하나님께서 이 일을 하시리라고 기대할 수 없습니다,”라고 말함으로써 거룩한 존재의 행동반경을 우리가 제한시키고 있습니다. 주님의 전능한 능력을 필요로 하는 일은 주님이 하실 것이라고 예수님의 제자로서 우리가 당연히 믿고 있는 바로 그러한 일인 것입니다. 주님은 전능 한 존재이심을 우리가 망각하는 순간 우리가 주님의 사역을 빈곤하게 만드는 것입니다. 우리는 위로하는 사람으로서 또는 동정자로서 예수님에게 나아갈 것이지만 전능한 존재로서 우리가 주님에게 나아가지는 않을 것입니다.

우리 중에 기독교도의 보잘것없는 표본이 되는 사람들이 존재하는 이유는 우리에게 전능하신 그리스도가 없기 때문입니다. 우리에게 그리스도인의 특성과 경험들이 있지만 예수 그리스도에 대한 헌신이 없습니다. 우리가 어려운 사정에 직면하게 될 때 우리는 “물론 주님은 아무것도 하실 수 없다.”고 말함으로써 우리가 주님의 사역을 빈곤에 빠뜨리고 깊은 곳까지 우리가 애써 내려가서 우리의 힘으로 물을 길어오려고 노력합니다. 풀썩 주저앉아서 “그건 할 수 없어”라고 말하여 만족하지 않도록 조심하십시오. 당신이 만일 주님을 바라보면 할 수 있다는 것을 당신은 알고 있습니다. 당신의 불완전함의 샘은 깊습니다. 그러나 노력하여 주님 쪽으로 눈길을 돌리십시오.

들을 수만 있다면 완전한 신뢰의 경이를 체험할 것인데요!

주님, 오늘 그것을 말씀하시옵소서.
