ACQUAINTANCE WITH GRIEF

“A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.”

                                   Isaiah 53:3

 

We are not acquainted with grief in the way in which Our Lord was acquainted with it; we endure it, we get through it, but we do not become intimate with it. At the beginning of life we do not reconcile ourselves to the fact of sin. We take a rational view of life and say that a man by controlling his instincts, and by educating himself, can produce a life which will slowly evolve into the life of God. But as we go on, we find the presence of something which we have not taken into consideration, viz., sin, and it upsets all our calculations. Sin has made the basis of things wild and not rational.

We have to recognize that sin is a fact, not a defect; sin is red-handed mutiny against God. Either God or sin must die in my life. The New Testament brings us right down to this one issue. If sin rules in me, God’s life in me will be killed; if God rules in me, sin in me will be killed. There is no possible ultimate but that. The climax of sin is that it crucified Jesus Christ, and what was true in the history of God on earth will be true in your history and in mine. In our mental outlook we have to reconcile ourselves to the fact of sin as the only explanation as to why Jesus Christ came, and the explanation of the grief and sorrow in life.

 

O Lord, there is no Time with Thee for “a thousand

years in Thy sight are but as yesterday when it is

past”; but with me it is necessarily different. How

Thou hast restored the years the cankerworm hath

eaten and created me a new creature in Christ Jesus!

비탄을 아는 자

“슬픔을 많이 겪었으며 비탄을 아는 자”

                                 이사야 53:3

 

우리 주님이 알았던 방법으로 우리가 비탄을 알지 못한다. 비탄을 우리는 참고, 통과하지만 비탄과 친밀하게 되지는 못한다. 삶의 처음에 우리는 죄의 사실을 감수하지 않는다. 우리는 삶을 이성적 관점으로 보고 사람은 자기 본능을 통제함으로써, 자신을 교육함으로써 하나님의 생명 속으로 서서히 진화하게 될 삶을 만들어낼 수 있다고 말한다. 그러나 우리가 앞으로 계속 진행함에 따라 우리가 고려한 적이 없는 무엇인가 즉 죄의 존재를 발견한다. 그런데 그 죄의 존재가 우리의 예측들을 모두 뒤집어 놓는다. 죄는 사물들의 기초를 거칠게 만들었으며 이성적이지 못하게 만들었다.

우리는 죄가 결함이 아니고 사실임을 인정해야 한다. 죄는 하나님에 대항하는 반란 현행범이다. 내 삶에서 하나님 또는 죄의 둘 중 하나가 반드시 죽어야 한다. 신약성경은 이 한 가지 문제로 우리를 막 바로 안내한다. 만일 내 안에서 죄가 지배하면 내 안에 있는 하나님의 생명은 죽임을 당할 것이다. 만일 내 안에서 하나님께서 지배하시면 내 안에 있는 죄는 죽임을 당할 것이다. 그것을 제외하고 다른 결론이 있을 수 없다. 죄의 절정은 예수 그리스도를 십자가에 못박아 죽인 것이다. 지구상의 하나님의 역사에 있어서 진실했던 것은 당신의 역사와 나의 역사에 있어서 사실이 될 것이다. 우리의 정신적 견해에 있어서 예수 그리스도께서 이 땅에 오신 이유에 관한 유일한 설명으로서, 그리고 삶에 존재하는 슬픔과 비판의 설명으로서 죄의 사실을 우리 스스로 감수해야 한다.

 

오 주님, “주님이 보시기에는 천 년이 지난 어제와

같을 뿐”인 점으로 미루어 볼 때 주님에게는 시간이란

개념이 적용되지 않습니다. 그러나 저에겐 필연적으로

다릅니다. 자벌레가 먹어버린 세월들을 어떻게 주님께서

회복시키시고 그리스도 예수 안에서 저를 새로운

피조물로 만드셨는지요! 저의 감사를 받아주시옵소서.
