THE MINISTRY OF THE INTERIOR

“But ye are . . . a royal priesthood.”

                                       1 Peter 2:9

 

By what right do we become “a royal priesthood”? By the right of the Atonement. Are we prepared to leave ourselves resolutely alone and to launch out into the priestly work of prayer? The continual grubbing on the inside to see whether we are what we ought to be, generates a self-centred, morbid type of Christianity, not the robust, simple life of the child of God. Until we get into a light relationship to God, it is a case of hanging on by the skin of our teeth, and we say—What a wonderful victory I have got! There is nothing indicative of the miracle of Redemption in that. Launch out in reckless belief that the Redemption is complete, and then bother no more about yourself, but begin to do as Jesus Christ said—pray for the friend who comes to you at midnight, pray for the saints, pray for all men. Pray on the realization that you are only perfect in Christ Jesus, not on this plea—“O Lord, I have done my best, please hear me.”

How long is it going to take God to free us from the morbid habit of thinking about ourselves? We must get sick unto death of ourselves, until there is no longer any surprise at anything God can tell us about ourselves. We cannot touch the depths of meanness in ourselves. There is only one place where we are right, and that is in Christ Jesus. When we are there, we have to pour out for all we are worth in this ministry of the interior.

 

Bless us all this day, garrison minds and hearts

from vague fancies and false emotions, from specters

of the imagination, and keep us wholesomely Thine.

영적 사역

“너희는 … 왕 같은 제사장들이요.”

                                        베드로전서 2:9

 

우리는 무슨 권리로 “왕 같은 제사장들”이 되는가? 속죄의 권리를 통해서다. 우리 자신을 홀로 결연히 내맡기고 왕 같은 제사장의 기도 사역을 시작할 수 있는가? 우리가 마땅히 갖춰야 할 인격이 되어 있는지 확인하기 위하여 쉴새 없이 마음속의 뿌리를 파내는 것은 하나님의 어린아이의 활발하고 단순한 삶이 아닌 자기중심적이고 병적인 형태의 기독교 신앙을 야기한다. 하나님에 대한 올바른 관계 속으로 우리가 들어갈 때까지 그것은 간신히 버틴 사례가 되어, 내가 놀랄만한 승리를 거뒀다! 라고 우리가 말하게 된다. 거기에는 구속의 기적을 나타내는 것은 아무것도 없다. 구속이 완전하다는 것을 대담하게 믿고 시작하라. 그런 다음 당신 자신에 대해 더 이상 신경 쓰지 말고, 밤중에 네게 찾아오는 친구를 위해 기도하라, 성도들을 위해 기도하라, 모든 사람들을 위해 기도하라고 예수 그리스도께서 말씀하신 것처럼 행동하기를 시작하라. 당신은 “오 주님, 제가 최선을 다 했습니다. 제게 경청해주시옵소서.”라는 이 간청을 근거로 하는 것이 아니고 그리스도 예수 안에서만 당신이 온전하다는 깨달음을 근거로 기도하라.

자기 의에 집착하는 우리들의 병적 습관으로부터 우리를 해방시키는데 하나님에게 얼마나 오랜 시간이 걸릴 것인가? 하나님께서 우리 자신에 대해서 말씀해주실 수 있는 놀랄만한 것이 더 이상 존재하지 않을 때까지 우리는 병들어 죽을 지경이 될 것임이 틀림없다. 우리가 올바르게 되는 곳은 단 하나 그리스도 예수 안에서뿐이다. 우리가 예수 그리스도 안에 거할 때 우리가 지닌 것 중에서 이 영적 사역에 도움이 되는 가치를 우리가 모두 쏟아 부어야 한다.

 

오늘 우리 모두를 축복해주시옵소서. 공허한 환상과 옳지 못한

감정들로부터, 상상력의 유령으로부터 마음을 지켜주시고 우리가

온전히 주님의 소유가 되도록 지켜주시옵소서.
