RECONCILING onE’S SELF TO THE FACT OF SIN

“This is your hour, and the power of darkness.”

                                 Luke 22:53

 

It is not being reconciled to the fact of sin that produces all the disasters in life. You may talk about the nobility of human nature, but there is something in human nature which will laugh in the face of every ideal you have. If you refuse to agree with the fact that there is vice and self-seeking, something downright spiteful and wrong in human beings, instead of reconciling yourself to it when it strikes your life, you will compromise with it and say it is of no use to battle against it. Have you made allowance for this hour and the power of darkness, or do you take a recognition of yourself that misses out sin? In your bodily relationships and friendships do you reconcile yourself to the fact of sin? If not, you will be caught round the next corner and you will compromise with it. If you reconcile yourself to the fact of sin, you will realize the danger at once—Yes, I see what that would mean. The recognition of sin does not destroy the basis of friendship; it establishes a mutual regard for the fact that the basis of life is tragic. Always beware of an estimate of life which does not recognize the fact that there is sin.

Jesus Christ never trusted human nature, yet He was never cynical, because He trusted absolutely in what He could do for human nature. The pure man or woman, not the innocent, is the safeguarded man or woman. You are never safe with an innocent man or woman. Men and women have no business to be innocent; God demands that they be pure and virtuous. Innocence is the characteristic of a child; it is a blameworthy thing for a man or woman not to be reconciled to the fact of sin.

 

O Lord, swamp me with Thy grace and glory that the

ample tide of Thyself may be all in all.

죄의 사실을 스스로 감수(甘受)함

“이제는 너희 때요 어둠의 권세로다.”

                                  누가복음 22:53

 

삶에 있어서 모든 재앙들을 산출하는 죄의 실제가 감수되지 않고 있다. 당신은 인간본성의 고결에 관하여 얘기할 수 있다. 그러나 당신이 가진 모든 이상을 마주보고 비웃을 무엇인가가 인간본성 안에 존재한다. 인간존재 안에 악덕과 이기주의, 철저히 심술궂고 옳지 못한 무엇인가가 존재한다는 사실을 감수하는 대신에 그 사실에 동의하기를 만일 당신이 거부한다면, 그것이 당신의 삶에 타격을 가할 때 당신은 그것과 타협을 하고 그것에 대항하여 싸우는 것이 아무 소용 없다고 말하게 될 것이다. 당신은 이 때와 어둠의 세력을 관대히 보아주었는가 그렇지 않으면 죄를 놓치는 당신 자신을 인정하는가? 당신의 육신적 관계와 우정들 속에서 죄의 실제를 스스로 감수하는가? 만일 감수하지 않는다면, 당신은 곧 발목이 잡혀 그것과 타협하게 될 것이다. 죄의 실제를 당신이 만일 감수한다면 즉시 위험을 당신이 깨닫게 되어, 예, 그것이 무엇을 의미하는지 이제야 비로소 내가 이해하겠습니다 라고 말하게 될 것이다. 죄를 인정한다고 해서 우정의 기초를 파괴하는 것은 아니다. 그것은 삶의 기초가 비극적이라는 사실을 상호 존중하는 관계를 형성한다. 죄가 존재한다는 사실을 인정하지 않는 삶의 견해를 항상 조심하라.

예수 그리스도께서는 인간본성을 결코 신뢰하지 않으셨다. 그렇지만 예수님께서는 결코 냉소적이 아니셨다. 왜냐하면 인간본성을 위해 자신이 하실 수 있는 일에 대해 절대적인 자신이 있었기 때문이다. 천진난만한 아이가 아닌 순결한 남녀는 보호함을 받은 남녀다. 당신은 순결한 남자 또는 여자와 더불어 결코 안심할 수 없다. 성인 남자들과 여자들은 순결하다는 권리가 없다. 하나님은 그들이 순결하고 덕이 높기를 요구하신다. 천진난만은 어린이의 특징이다. 남자 또는 여자가 죄의 실제를 감수하지 않는 것은 비난받을 만한 일이다.

 

오 주님, 주님의 은혜와 영광으로 저를 가득 채워 고스란히

주님으로 충만케 하옵소서.
