OUR LORD’S SURPRISE VISITS

“Be ye therefore ready also.”

Luke 12:40

 

The great need for the Christian worker is to be ready to face Jesus Christ at any and every turn. This is not easy, no matter what our experience is. The battle is not against sin or difficulties or circumstances, but against being so absorbed in work that we are not ready to face Jesus Christ at every turn. That is the one great need, not the facing of our belief, or our creed, or the question whether we are of any use, but to face Him.

Jesus rarely comes where we expect Him; He appears where we least expect Him, and always in the most illogical connections. The only way a worker can keep true to God is by being ready for the Lord’s surprise visits. It is not service that matters, but intense spiritual reality, expecting Jesus Christ at every turn. This will give our life the attitude of child-wonder which He wants it to have. If we are going to be ready for Jesus Christ, we have to stop being religious (that is, using religion as a higher kind of culture) and be spiritually real.

If you are “looking off unto Jesus,” avoiding the call of the religious age you live in, and setting your heart on what He wants, on thinking on His line─you will be called unpractical and dreamy; but when He appears in the burden and the heat of the day, you will be the only one who is ready. Trust no one, not even the finest saint who ever walked this earth, ignore him, if he hinders your sight of Jesus Christ.

 

  “And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their Lord”─might I be

like that, waiting, eager, dutiful, alert, and full of power and presence

of mind.

우리 주님의 갑작스런 방문들

“그러므로 너희도 준비하고 있으라.”

누가복음 12:40

 

크리스천 사역자에게 가장 필요한 것은 언제 어디서나 예수 그리스도를 만날 준비가 되어 있어야 한다는 점입니다. 우리의 경험이 어떠하든 이것이 쉬운 일은 아닙니다. 죄 또는 어려움 또는 상황에 대한 싸움이 아니고 어느 때든 예수 그리스도를 만날 준비가 되어 있지 않을 정도로 일에 빠져있는 문제점에 대한 싸움인 것입니다. 우리의 믿음 또는 신조, 우리가 어떤 쓸모가 있는지 없는지 하는 문제가 아니고 주님을 만나는 것이 중대한 필요성의 하나입니다.

우리가 기대하는 곳에 예수님께서 오시는 것은 드문 일입니다. 예수님께서는 우리가 기대하기 어려운 곳에 항시 논리적으로 가장 연관성이 없는 상황에서 나타나십니다. 어떤 사역자가 하나님께 진실을 유지할 수 있는 유일한 방법은 어느 때라도 주님의 갑작스런 방문을 맞을 수 있는 준비가 되어 대기하는 자세를 취하는 것입니다. 중요한 것은 섬김이 아니고 어느 때라도 예수 그리스도께서 오실 것을 기대하면서 영적으로 깨어있는 열정적인 실체가 되는 것이 중요한 것입니다. 이것은 주님께서 원하시는 바 어린아이의 경탄의 태도를 우리 삶에 제공할 것입니다. 우리가 만일 예수 그리스도를 맞을 준비를 할 작정이라면 우리는 교회 다니는 것을 고상한 교양의 일종으로 생각하는 습관적인 종교적 태도를 버리고 영적으로 진실해야 합니다.

당신이 만일 당신이 속해 살고 있는 종교적 세대의 부름을 외면하면서 주님께서 원하시는 것과 주님의 가르침에 대한 생각에 마음을 쏟으면서 “예수님을 바라보고” 있다면─당신은 꿈을 꾸며 현실을 회피한다는 말을 들을 것입니다. 그러나 고단하고 분주한 일상의 생활 가운데 주님께서 나타나실 때 주님을 맞을 준비가 되어 있는 사람은 오직 당신 한 사람뿐일 것입니다. 예수 그리스도를 향한 당신의 시야를 만일 가리는 경우라면 아무도 믿지 말고 심지어 이 지구 상에 살았던 가장 훌륭한 성인까지도 무시하십시오.

 

    “그리고 너희들 자신이 그들의 주님을 기다리는 사람들을 닮아”─제가

그와 같이 되어서 열정적으로 의무감을 가지고 깨어서 그리고 능력이

충만하여 온 마음을 쏟아 기다리게 하옵소서.
