THE BAFFLING CALL OF GOD

“And all things that are written by the prophets concerning

                               the Son of man shall be accomplished. . . . And they understood

                              none of these things.”

 Luke 18:31, 34

 

God called Jesus Christ to what seemed unmitigated disaster. Jesus Christ called His disciples to see Him put to death; He led every one of them to the place where their hearts were broken. Jesus Christ’s life was an absolute failure from every standpoint but God’s. But what seemed failure from man’s standpoint was a tremendous triumph from God’s, because God’s purpose is never man’s purpose.

There comes the baffling call of God in our lives also. The call of God can never be stated explicitly; it is implicit. The call of God is like the call of the sea, no one hears it but the one who has the nature of the sea in him. It cannot be stated definitely what the call of God is to, because His call is to be in comradeship with Himself for His own purpose, and the test is to believe that God knows what He is after. The things that happen do not happen by chance, they happen entirely in the decree of God. God is working out His purposes.

If we are in communion with God and recognize that He is taking us into His purposes, we shall no longer try to find out what His purposes are. As we go on in the Christian life it gets simpler, because we are less inclined to say—Now why did God allow this and that? Behind the whole thing lies the compelling of God. “There’s a divinity that shapes our ends.” A Christian is one who trusts the wits and the wisdom of God, and not his own wits. If we have a purpose of our own, it destroys the simplicity and the leisureliness which ought to characterize the children of God.

 

O Lord, disentangle me, I have a great longing for a

simplicity of relationship with Thee that shall transfigure

everything and shed blessing and benediction all around.

불가해한 하나님의 부르심

“선지자들을 통하여 기록된 모든 것이 인자에게 응하리라…

                                  그러나 제자들이 이것을 하나도 깨닫지 못하였으니.”

누가복음 18:31, 34

 

하나님께서는 순전히 재앙으로 보이는 것으로 예수 그리스도를 부르셨습니다. 예수 그리스도께서는 제자들을 부르셔서 그가 죽음을 당하는 것을 보게 하셨습니다. 주님께서는 제자들 모두를 마음이 산산 조각나는 고통의 현장으로 인도하셨습니다. 예수 그리스도의 삶은 하나님을 제외하고 모든 관점에서 볼 때 철저한 실패였습니다. 그러나 인간의 관점에서 실패로 보였던 것이 하나님의 관점에서는 굉장한 승리였습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님의 목적은 절대로 인간의 목적이 아니기 때문입니다.

우리 삶에서도 역시 하나님의 불가해한 부르심이 나타납니다. 하나님의 부르심은 결코 명시적으로 기술될 수 없습니다. 그건 암시적입니다. 하나님의 부르심은 바다의 부름과 같습니다. 바다의 본질을 내재하고 있는 사람이 아니면 바다의 부름을 듣지 못합니다. 하나님의 부르심이 무엇에 관한 것인지 단정적으로 말할 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님의 부르심은 하나님 자신의 목적을 위해 하나님 자신과 동지관계 속에 있어야 하기 때문입니다. 그러므로 하나님께서 추구하시는 것을 하나님께서 알고 계신다는 것을 믿는 것이 테스트가 됩니다. 발생하는 사물들은 우연히 발생하지 않습니다. 전적으로 하나님의 뜻에 따라 발생합니다. 하나님께서 하나님의 목적들을 실행하고 계시는 중입니다.

만약 우리가 하나님과 교통하면서 하나님의 목적 속으로 우리를 인도하고 계시는 중이라는 사실을 인정한다면 하나님의 목적이 무엇인지 찾아내려고 우리가 더 이상 노력하지 않을 것입니다. 우리가 그리스도인의 삶을 계속 살아감에 따라 그 삶이 점차 더 단순해집니다. 왜냐하면 ‘자 하나님께서 이것 저것을 허용하시는 이유가 무엇일까?’라고 우리가 말하는 경향이 줄어들기 때문입니다. 모든 것의 배후에는 하나님의 강권적인 섭리가 작용합니다. “우리의 목적을 구체화하는 하나님의 권능이 존재합니다.” 크리스천은 하나님의 기지와 지혜를 신뢰하는 사람입니다. 그러나 그 자신의 기지는 신뢰하지 않습니다. 만약 우리에게 자신의 목적이 있으면 그것은 하나님의 어린 아이들을 마땅히 특징짓는 단순성과 서두르지 않는 느긋함을 파괴합니다.

 

오오 주님, 저를 해방시키옵소서, 모든 것을 변화시켜 주위에 온통

축복과 은총을 베푸실 주님과 단순한 관계를 갖고자 하는 대단한

열망이 제게 있습니다.
