SHALLOW AND PROFOUND

 

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do,

                              do all to the glory of God.”

           1 Corinthians 10:31

 

Beware of allowing yourself to think that the shallow concerns of life are not ordained of God; they are as much of God as the profound. It is not your devotion to God that makes you refuse to be shallow, but your wish to impress other people with the fact that you are a spiritual prig. Be careful of the production of contempt in yourself, it always comes along this line, and cause you to go about as a walking rebuke to other people because they are more shallow than you are. Beware of posing as a profound person; God became a baby.

To be shallow is not a sign of being wicked, nor is shallowness a sign that there are no deeps: the ocean has a shore. The shallow amenities of life, eating and drinking, walking and talking, are all ordained by God. These are the things in which Our Lord lived. He lived in them as the Son of God, and He said that “the disciple is not above his Master.”

Our safeguard is in the shallow things. We have to live the surface common-sense life in a common-sense way; when the deeper things come, God gives them to us apart from the shallow concerns. Never show the deeps to anyone but God, We are so abominably serious, so desperately interested in our own characters, that we refuse to behave like Christians in the shallow concerns of life.

Determinedly take no one seriously but God, and the first person you find you have to leave severely alone as being the greatest fraud you have ever known, is yourself.

 

 

Lord, today give me the intuitive, instinctive inspiration

of Thy Holy Spirit that I may discern Thee in all things.

Fill the whole day with Thy gracious presence and peace.

천박함과 고상함

 

“그런즉 너희가 먹든지 마시든지 무엇을 하든지 다

                  하나님의 영광을 위하여 하라.”

                                                                                                      고린도전서 10:31

 

삶의 천박한 일상사는 하나님에 의하여 정해진 것이 아니라는 생각을 조심하십시오. 천박한 것들은 고상한 것들만큼 하나님에게 중요한 것들입니다. 천박하기를 당신이 거부하도록 만드는 것은 하나님에 대한 당신의 헌신이 아니라, 당신이 영적으로 우월하다는 사실로 다른 사람들에게 깊은 감명을 주기 위한 당신의 갈망 때문입니다. 당신 안에 다른 사람을 경멸하는 마음이 생기는 것을 주의하십시오. 이러한 경멸은 항시 이러한 영적 교만에서 발생하는 것으로서 다른 사람들이 당신보다 천박하기 때문에 당신을 걸어 다니는 책망꾼이 되게 하는 것입니다. 고상한 사람인체하는 것을 조심하십시오. 하나님도 동정녀 마리아의 잉태를 통해 육신의 모습을 갖추고 말구유에서 태어나심으로써 갓난아기가 되셨습니다.

천박한 것은 악하다는 표시가 아니고, 천박함은 깊이가 없다는 표시도 아닙니다. 즉 바다도 물이 얕은 곳인 해안이 있습니다. 사람들의 먹고 마시기, 걷고 말하기와 같은 생활의 천박한 즐거움들 모두가 하나님이 정하신 것들입니다. 우리 예수님도 이러한 천박한 일들 가운데 사셨습니다. 예수님은 천박한 일들 가운데 “하나님의 아들”로 사셨으며, 그리고 또한 “제자가 그 선생보다 높지 못하다” 라고 말씀하셨습니다.

우리의 보호 수단은 천박한 것들 안에 있습니다. 우리는 상식적인 방법을 이용하여 경험으로 터득한 상식적 판단력을 근간으로 하는 표면상의 삶을 살아야 합니다. 심오한 것들이 나타날 때 천박한 관심사와는 별개로 하나님께서는 심오한 것들을 우리에게 주십니다. 심오한 것들을 하나님 외에 아무에게도 보이지 마십시오. 우리는 혐오스러울 정도로 너무 심각하고 우리들 자신의 평판에 필사적으로 관심이 있기 때문에 천박한 일상사에 있어서 크리스천처럼 행동하기를 거부합니다.

하나님 외에는 누구도 심각하게 보지 마십시오. 그리고 또한 당신이 지금까지 아는 사람들 중에 가장 뛰어난 사기꾼으로서 당신이 고의로 멀리해야 함을 당신이 비로소 깨닫게 된 첫 번째 사람은 바로 당신 자신입니다.

  

주님, 오늘 제게 성령의 직관적인 영감을 주셔서 제가 모든 점에서 주님을 알아볼 수 있도록

하옵소서. 온 종일 주님의 은혜로운 참석과 평화로 충만하게 채워주시옵소서.
