HIS TEMPTATION AND OURS

“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched

                              with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points

                              tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”

                                                Hebrew 4:15

 

Until we are born again, the only kind of temptation we understand is that mentioned by St. James—“Every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.” But by regeneration we are lifted into another realm where there are other temptations to face, viz., the kind of temptations our Lord faced. The temptations of Jesus do not appeal to us. They have no home in our human nature. Our Lord’s temptation and ours move in different spheres until we are born again and become His brethren. The temptations of Jesus are not those of a man, but the temptations of God as Man. By regeneration the Son of God is formed in us, and in our physical life He has the same setting that He had on earth. Satan does not tempt us to do wrong things; he tempts us in order to make us lose what God has put into us by regeneration, viz., the possibility of being of value to God. He does not come on the line tempting us to sin, but on the line of shifting the point of view, and only the Spirit of God can detect this as a temptation of the devil.

Temptation means the test by an alien power of the possessions held by a personality. This makes the temptation of our Lord explainable. After Jesus in His baptism had accepted the vocation of bearing away the sin of the world, He was immediately put by God’s Spirit into the testing machine of the devil, but He did not tire, He went through the temptation “without sin,” and He retained the possessions of His personality intact.

 

O Lord, how little I realize what it means to watch with Thee, to continue with Thee

in Thy temptations. Draw me nearer this morning and insulate me by Thy mighty power

until I speak and live only for Thee.

주님께서 받으신 시험과 우리가 받는 시험

“우리에게 있는 대제사장은 우리의 연약함을 동정하지 못하실

                                           이가 아니요 모든 일에 우리와 똑같이 시험을 받으신 이로되

                              죄는 없으시니라.”

                                                                                                          히브리서 4:15

 

우리가 성령으로 거듭날 때까지 우리가 이해하는 한 가지 시험은 “자신의 탐심에 이끌려 유혹을 당할 때 누구나 시험을 받는다”는 사도 야고보의 말씀입니다. 그러나 부활로 말미암은 신생을 통해 우리는 다른 영역으로 들어올려져 다른 시험들 즉, 우리 주님께서 당하셨던 시험들에 직면하게 되는 것입니다. 예수님께서 받으신 시험들은 우리 마음에 와 닿지 않고 우리 인간본성으로는 조금도 이해되지 않습니다. 우리 주님께서 받으신 시험들과 우리가 받는 시험들은 우리가 거듭나서 주님의 형제가 될 때까지는 서로 다른 영역에서 진전됩니다. 주님께서 받으신 시험들은 사람이 받는 시험들과 같은 것이 아니고 인간으로 오신 하나님께서 받으신 시험들인 것입니다. 신생을 통해 하나님의 아들의 성품이 우리 안에 형성됩니다. 그리하여 이 지상에 계셨을 때 소유하셨던 것과 동일한 도구 설비를 우리의 육신적인 삶 가운데서 주님께서 사용하실 준비가 되어 있는 것입니다. 사탄은 우리가 나쁜 일들을 하도록 시험하지 않습니다. 사탄은 신생을 통해 하나님께서 우리 안에 형성하신 것 즉, 하나님께 가치 있는 존재가 될 가능성을 우리로 하여금 상실하도록 우리를 시험하는 것입니다. 사탄은 우리가 죄를 짓도록 시험하는 차원이 아니고 관점을 바꾸도록 하는 차원에서 역사하기 때문에 오직 성령님께서만 이것이 사탄의 시험이라는 것을 간파하실 수 있는 것입니다.

시험은 어떤 인격이 보유한 외적인 능력에 지배되어 받게 되는 테스트입니다. 이와 같은 설명으로 우리 주님께서 받으신 시험들을 이해할 수 있습니다. 예수님께서 세례를 받으실 때 이 세상 죄를 짊어지는 사명을 받아들이신 후 성령에 이끌리어 시험하는 사탄의 능력 속에 놓이게 되었습니다. 그러나 주님께서는 물러나지 않으셨습니다. 주님께서는 죄 없이 이 시험을 통과하시고 주님 인격의 지배를 온전하게 유지하셨습니다.

 

오오 주님, 주님께서 시험 받으실 때 주님과 함께 계속 깨어 있는다는

것이 무엇을 의미하는지 제가 잘 모르고 있습니다! 제가 주님만을 위해

말하고 살 때까지 주님의 권능을 통해 오늘 아침 저를 더 가까이

끌어주시고 악으로부터 격리시켜 주시옵소서.
