THE MISSIONARY’S GOAL

“Behold, we go up to Jerusalem.”

                             Luke 18:31

 

In the natural life our ambitions alter as we develop; in the Christian life the goal is given at the beginning, the beginning and the end are the same, viz., our Lord Himself. We start with Christ and we end with Him—“until we all attain to the stature of the manhood of Christ Jesus,” not to our idea of what the Christian life should be. The aim of the missionary is to do God’s will, not to be useful, not to win the heathen; he is useful and he does win the heathen, but that is not his aim. His aim is to do the will of his Lord.

In our Lord’s life Jerusalem was the place where he reached the climax of His Father’s will upon the cross, and unless we go with Jesus there we will have no companionship with Him. Nothing ever discouraged Our Lord on His way to Jerusalem. He never hurried through certain villages where He was persecuted, or lingered in others where He was blessed. Neither gratitude nor ingratitude turned Our Lord one’s hair’s breadth away from His purpose to go up to Jerusalem.

“The disciple is not above his Master.” The same things will happen to us on our way to our Jerusalem. There will be the works of God manifested through us, people will get blessed, and one or two will show gratitude and the rest will show gross ingratitude, but nothing must deflect us from going up to our Jerusalem.

“There they crucified Him.” That is what happened when Our Lord reached Jerusalem, and that happening is the gateway to our salvation. The saints do not end in crucifixion: by the Lord’s grace they end in glory. In the meantime our watchword is—I, too, go up to Jerusalem.

 

Lord, how good it is for me to know Thee; how essentially

necessary it is for me to draw near to Thee. How can I falter

when Thou art my Life!

 선교사의 목적

“보라 우리가 예루살렘으로 올라가노니.”

                                                                                                                       누가복음 18:31

 

타고난 삶 가운데 우리가 발전함에 따라 우리 포부는 변합니다. 크리스천의 삶에서 목표는 처음에 주어지는데, 처음과 끝이 동일합니다, 즉 우리 주님 자신이 목표입니다. 크리스천 삶의 당위성에 대한 우리 생각이 아닌 “그리스도 예수의 남자다운 위상에 우리 모두가 도달할 때까지” 우리는 그리스도와 함께 시작해서 그리스도와 함께 끝납니다. 선교사의 목적은 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 것이지, 쓸모 있는 사람이 되고 이교도와 싸워 이기는 것이 목적이 아닙니다. 그는 유익한 사람이며 이교도와 싸워 이깁니다. 그러나 그것이 목적은 아닙니다. 그의 목적은 그의 주님의 뜻을 행하는 것입니다.

우리 주님의 생애에서 예루살렘은 십자가 위에서 그분의 아버지의 뜻의 최정상에 도달한 장소였습니다. 그러므로 예수님과 함께 우리가 그곳으로 동행하지 않으면 주님과 우리는 친구가 될 수 없을 것입니다. 예루살렘으로 가시는 길에 아무 것도 우리 주님을 낙담시키지 않았습니다. 주님께서 핍박 받으셨던 어떤 마을들을 지나실 때 서둘지 않으셨고 축복 받으셨던 다른 마을들에서 떠나기를 망설이지도 않으셨습니다. 주님의 은혜에 대한 감사의 표시에도 배은망덕에도 꿈쩍도 않고 주님의 목적대로 태연히 예루살렘으로 올라가셨습니다.

“제자가 그의 선생님보다 낫지 않다.” 우리가 예루살렘으로 가는 길에도 동일한 상황이 발생할 것입니다. 우리를 통해서 하나님의 역사가 나타나서 사람들이 축복을 받을 것이며 한 두 사람은 은혜에 감사를 표시할 것이고 나머지 사람들은 심한 배은망덕을 보일 것입니다. 그러나 무엇으로도 예루살렘으로 올라가는 우리를 비끼게 해서는 안 됩니다.

“거기서 그들은 주님을 십자가에 못박았습니다.” 그것이 우리 주님께서 예루살렘에 도착하셨을 때 발생했던 사건입니다. 그리하여 그 사건이 우리의 구원에 이르는 통로가 됩니다. 성도들은 십자가에서의 죽음으로 끝나는 게 아닙니다. 즉, 주님의 은총을 통해서 영광으로 끝나는 것입니다. 한편으로는 ‘나도 예루살렘으로 올라간다’가 우리의 표어입니다.

 

주님, 제가 주님을 알고 있는 것이 얼마나 유익한 일인지요. 주님 가까이

제가 다가가는 것이 본질적으로 얼마나 필요한 일인지요. 주님께서 나의

생명이 되실 때 내가 어떻게 망설일 수 있나요!
