THE “GO” OF PREPARATION

“Therefore If thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there thou

  rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave

there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be rec-

                              onciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.”

                                       Mathew 5:23-24

 

It is easy to imagine that we will get to a place where we are complete and ready, preparation is not suddenly accomplished, it is a process steadily maintained. It is dangerous to get into a settled state of experience. It is preparation and preparation.

The sense of sacrifice appeals readily to a young Christian. Humanly speaking, the one thing that attracts to Jesus Christ is our sense of the heroic, and the scrutiny of our Lord’s words suddenly brings this tide of enthusiasm to the test. “First be reconciled to thy brother.” The “go” of preparation is to let the word of God scrutinize. The sense of heroic sacrifice is not good enough. The thing the Holy Spirit is detecting in you is the disposition that will never work in His service. No one but God can detect that disposition in you. Have you anything to hide from God? If you have, then let God search you with His light. If there is sin, confess it, not admit it. Are you willing to obey your Lord and Master whatever the humiliation to your right to yourself may be?

Never discard a conviction. If it is important enough for the Spirit of God to have brought it to your mind, it is that thing He is detecting. You were looking for a great thing to give up. God is telling you of some tiny thing; but at the back of it there lies the central citadel of obstinacy: I will not give up my right to myself—the thing God intends you to give up if ever you are going to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.

 

Lord, cause this day to be filled with Thy praise. Give me release

from this medley of distractions, from attentiveness of nerves to all

the details that press. I praise Thee that my mind is stayed on Thee,

but I do desire Thy beauty to be upon me.

 성공적인 준비

“그러므로 예물을 제단에 드리려다가 거기서 네 형제에게

   원망들을 만한 일이 있는 것이 생각나거든 예물을 제단 앞에

    두고 먼저 가서 형제와 화목하고 그 후에 와서 예물을 드리라.”

                                                                                                                 마태복음 5:23-24

 

우리가 완전히 준비되어 있는 장소에 도달할 것이라고 상상하는 것은 쉬운 일입니다. 그러나 준비는 갑자기 이뤄지는 게 아닙니다. 그것은 꾸준히 유지되는 과정입니다. 고정된 상태의 경험에 의존하는 것은 위험합니다. 준비하고 또 준비하는 끊임 없는 과정이 필요합니다.

젊은 크리스천에게는 희생한다는 생각이 즉시 마음에 와 닿습니다. 인간적으로 말하면, 예수 그리스도의 주의를 끄는 한 가지는 영웅적인 것에 대한 우리의 생각입니다. 우리 주님께서 하신 말씀을 면밀히 음미해보니 이와 같은 열정의 흥망성쇠가 테스트 받고 있다는 생각이 불쑥 듭니다. “먼저 형제와 화해하라.” 준비의 “성공”은 하나님의 말씀에 비추어 면밀히 검사하는 것입니다. 영웅적으로 희생하겠다는 생각만으로는 충분하지 않습니다. 성령께서 여러분 안에서 간파하고 계시는 것은 주님을 위한 섬김에 절대로 도움이 되지 않을 기질입니다. 하나님께 숨길 어떤 것이 여러분에게 있습니까? 만일 여러분에게 그런 것이 있다면, 하나님으로 하여금 주님의 빛으로 여러분을 자세히 살피시도록 하세요. 만일 죄가 있다면 그걸 인정하는 수준에서 그치는 게 아니라 그 잘못을 고백하고 용서를 비세요. 여러분 자신의 권리에 어떠한 모욕이 가해질지라도 여러분의 선생님인 주님에게 기꺼이 순종하시겠습니까?

확신을 결코 버리지 마세요. 만일 성령께서 여러분 마음에 생각나도록 할 만큼 중요하다면 바로 그것이 성령께서 간파하고 계시는 것입니다. 포기할 대상으로 여러분은 어떤 위대한 것을 찾고 있었습니다. 하나님께서는 어떤 사소한 것에 대해서 여러분에게 이르고 계십니다. 그러나 그 사소한 것의 배후에서 완고함이 요새처럼 지배하고 있는 것입니다. 즉, 나는 내 자신의 권리를 포기하지 않겠다는 완고함인데 그것은 만일 여러분이 예수 그리스도의 제자가 될 작정이라면 하나님께서 여러분에게 포기하기를 의도하시는 것입니다.

 

주님, 오늘 주님에 대한 찬양으로 충만하게 하옵소서. 이어지는

산만함으로부터, 짓누르는 모든 자세한 사항들 모두로부터 저를

해방시켜주시옵소서. 제 마음이 주님에게 사로잡혀 있음으로

주님을 찬양합니다. 그러나 주님의 아름다움이 제게 임하기를

진정으로 열망합니다.
