THE LAW OF ANTAGONISM

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith

               unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat

                of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.”

   Life without war is impossible either in nature or in grace. The basis of physical, mental, moral, and spiritual life is antagonism. This is the open fact of life.

   Health is the balance between physical life and external nature, and it is maintained only by sufficient vitality on the inside against things on the outside. Everything outside my physical life is designed to put me to death. Things which keep me going when I am alive, disintegrate me when I am dead. If I have enough fighting power, I produce the balance of health. The same is true of the mental life. If I want to maintain a vigorous mental life, I have to fight, and in that way the mental balance called thought is produced.

   Morally it is the same. Everything that does not partake of the nature of virtue is the enemy of virtue in me, and it depends on what moral caliber I have whether I overcome and produce virtue. Immediately I fight, I am moral in that particular. No man is virtuous because he cannot help it; virtue is acquired.

   And spiritually it is the same. Jesus said, “in the world ye shall have tribulation,” i.e., everything that is not spiritual makes for my undoing, but-“be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” I have to learn to score off the things that come against me, and in that way produce the balance of holiness; then it becomes a delight to meet opposition.

   Holiness is the balance between my disposition and the law of God as expressed in Jesus Christ.

  

   Lord Jesus, twenty centuries ago Thou wast here on

this earth, “manifested in the flesh.” Be here again

today, manifested in my flesh-“Christ in you, the

hope of glory.”

적대관계의 법칙

 

“귀 있는 자는 성령이 교회들에게 하시는 말씀을 들을지어다

                    이기는 그에게는 내가 하나님의 낙원에 있는 생명나무의

                   열매를 주어 먹게 하리라.”

                                                                                                     요한계시록 2:7

 

자연계이든 은혜의 세계든 싸움이 없는 삶은 있을 수 없다. 신체적, 정신적, 도덕적, 영적 삶의 기초는 적대 관계입니다. 이것은 공공연한 삶의 현실입니다.

건강은 육체적 생명과 외부 자연계 사이의 조화입니다. 그래서 건강은 외부의 물질계에 대항하는 충분한 내적 체력에 의해서만 유지됩니다. 나의 육체적 생명의 외부에 있는 모든 것들은 나를 죽음에 빠뜨리게 되어있습니다. 내가 살아 있을 때 나를 계속 존재케 하는 것들은 내가 죽을 때는 나를 해체합니다. 만일 내가 싸워 이길 힘을 충분히 갖고 있으면 나는 건강의 조화를 이루어냅니다. 지적 생명도 마찬가지입니다. 만일 내가 활기찬 지적 생명을 유지하고 싶다면 내가 싸우지 않으면 안됩니다. 그리하여 그러한 방법으로 소위 생각이라고 하는 지적 조화가 생산됩니다.

도덕적 견지에서도 마찬가지입니다. 덕의 본성을 갖지 않은 것은 모두 내 안에 있는 덕의 적입니다. 그리고 내가 덕을 쌓으며 이기며 사느냐 하는 것은 내가 가진 도덕적 도량에 달려있습니다. 내가 싸우는 즉시 나는 그 문제에서 도덕적입니다. 싸울 수 없기 때문에 아무도 덕이 높지 않은 것입니다. 덕은 저절로 생기는 것이 아니고 싸워 이겨서 후천적으로 획득되는 것입니다.

그리고 영적으로도 마찬가지 입니다. 예수님께서는 “세상에서는 너희가 환난을 당하나”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 즉 영적이 아닌 모든 것은 나의 파멸을 조장합니다. 그러나 “담대하라, 내가 세상을 이기었노라." 나를 대항하는 것들을 말살하는 방법을 배워서 그러한 방법으로 내가 신성(神性)의 조화를 반드시 이루어야 합니다. 그러고 나면 적을 만나는 것이 기쁨이 됩니다.

신성은 나의 성질과 예수 그리스도 안에서 표현된 하나님의 법칙 사이의 조화입니다.

 

2000년 전에 “육체로 나타나셔서” 이 지구상 이곳에 계셨던 주 예수님.

“당신 안에 계신 그리스도, 영광의 소망”의 찬송을 부를 수 있도록

제 육체 안에 나타나셔 오늘 이곳에 재림하시옵소서.
