REPENTANCE

“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation

not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world

                worketh death.”

2 Corinthians 7:10

                                                  

   My conviction of sin is best portrayed in the words:

My sins, my sins, my Saviour,

How sad on Thee they fall.

   Conviction of sin is one of the rarest things that ever strike a man. It is the threshold of an understanding of God. Jesus Christ said that when the Holy Spirit came He would convict of sin, and the Holy Spirit rouses a man’s conscience and brings him into the presence of God, it is not his relationship with men that bothers him, but his relationship with God-“against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Thy sight.” The marvels of conviction of sin, forgiveness, and holiness are so interwoven that it is only the forgiven man who is the holy man, he proves he is forgiven by being the opposite to what he was, by God’s grace. Repentance always brings a man to this point: I have sinned. The surest sign that God is at work is when a man says that and means it. Anything less than this is a remorse for having made blunders, the reflex action of disgust at himself.

   The entrance into the Kingdom is through the panging pains of repentance crashing into a man’s respectable goodness; then the Holy Ghost, Who produces these agonies, begins the formation of the Son of God in the life. The new life will manifest itself in conscious repentance and unconscious holiness, never the other way about. The bedrock of Christianity is repentance. Strictly speaking, a man cannot repent when he chooses; repentance is a gift of God. If ever you cease to know the virtue of repentance, you are in darkness. Examine yourself and see if you have forgotten how to be sorry.

 

    O Lord, to praise Thee aright is a great desire of mine,

    created and fostered by Thy Spirit and grace.

“하나님의 뜻대로 하는 근심은 후회할 것이 없는 구원에

                   이르게 하는 회개를 이루는 것이요 세상 근심은 사망을

                   이루는 것이니라.”

                                                                                                        고린도후서 7:10

죄에 대한 나의 가책은 다음과 같은 말들로 가장 잘 표현됩니다.

        나의 죄들, 나의 죄들, 나의 구세주,

        그 모든 나의 죄들이 나의 구세주 주님의 어깨에 걸리니

얼마나 비통한 일인지요.

죄의 책망은 사람에게 충격을 주는 가장 보기 드문 일들 중의 하나입니다. 죄의 책망은 하나님을 이해하는 출발점입니다. 예수 그리스도는 성령이 오시면 그분이 죄를 책망하실 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 성령이 인간의 양심을 일깨워 인간을 하나님의 존전으로 데리고 가실 때, 그 사람을 괴롭히는 것은 사람들과의 관계가 아니고 “내가 주께만 범죄하여 주의 목전에 악을 행하였사오니.”(시 51:4) 라는 고백처럼 하나님과의 관계로 인해 고통을 당하게 되는 것입니다. 죄의 가책, 용서, 그리고 신성(神性)의 경이적인 결과들은 상호 긴밀하게 연결되어 있기 때문에 용서 받은 사람만이 거룩한 사람입니다. 그는 하나님의 은혜로 과거의 자신과 정반대의 사람이 됨으로써 자신의 죄가 용서 받음을 증명합니다. 회개는 언제나 “내가 죄를 지었습니다”라고 말하는 고백의 단계로 사람을 데리고 갑니다. 하나님이 역사하고 계시다는 가장 확실한 증거는 사람이 자기가 죄를 지었다고 말하며 그 사실을 인정할 때입니다. 여기에 미치지 못하는 것은 무엇이든지 실수를 저질렀다는 후회로서 자신에 대한 혐오감의 반사 작용일 뿐입니다.

천국에 들어가는 것은 어떤 한 사람의 존경할 만한 양선에 충격적으로 부딪쳐 그 양선의 가치에 경탄(驚歎)하면서 가슴 아픈 회개의 고통을 통과함으로써 시작되는 것입니다. 그런 다음에 이러한 고통들을 생산하는 성령은 그 사람의 생애 속에 하나님의 아들의 형성을 시작하십니다. 새 생명은 의식적인 회개와 무의식적인 신성(神性)으로 나타날 것입니다. 그것이 아닌 다른 방법으로 새 생명이 나타나지는 않을 것입니다. 기독교의 기본 원리는 회개입니다. 엄밀히 말하자면 사람이 때를 선택하여 아무 때나 회개할 수 없습니다. 회개는 하나님의 선물입니다. 만일 당신이 회개의 덕을 알기를 중단하면 당신은 어두움 가운데 있게 됩니다. 당신 자신을 반성하고 회개하는 방법을 잊어버렸는지 확인해 보십시오.

 

오오 주님, 주님을 올바로 찬양하는 것이 주님의 은총과

성령으로 빚어져 양육 받고 있는 저의 큰 열망입니다.
