“AND EVERY VIRTUE WE POSSESS”

“All my fresh springs shall be in Thee.”

Psalm 87:7, PBV

 

   Our Lord never patches up our natural virtues, He remakes the whole man on the inside. “Put on the new man,” i.e., see that your natural human life puts on the garb that is in keeping with the new life. The life God plants in us develops its own virtues, not the virtues of Adam but of Jesus Christ. Watch how God will wither up your confidence in natural virtues after sanctification, and in any power you have, until you learn to draw your life from the reservoir of the resurrection life of Jesus. Thank God if you are going through a drying-up experience!

   The sign that God is at work in us is that he corrupts confidence in the natural virtues, because they are not promises of what we are going to be, but remnants of what God created man to be. We will cling to the natural virtues, while all the time God is trying to get us into contact with the life of Jesus Christ which can never be described in terms of the natural virtues. It is the saddest thing to see people in the service of God depending on that which the grace of God never gave them, depending on what they have by the accident of heredity. God does not build up our natural virtues and transfigure them, because our natural virtues can never come anywhere near what Jesus Christ wants. No natural love, no natural patience, no natural purity can ever come up to His demands. But as we bring every bit of our bodily life into harmony with the new life which God has put in us, He will exhibit in us the virtues that were characteristic of the Lord Jesus.

                       And every virtue we possess

                       Is His alone.

 

         O Lord, Thou art ever well, and all my fresh springs

are in Thee. To Thee I come; may Thy mighty life

spring up in me, a veritable influx into body as well as

spirit.

"우리가 소유하는 모든 덕"

“저의 신선한 모든 근원들이 주님에게 있다 할 것입니다.”

                                                                                               시편 87:7

 

우리 주님은 결코 우리의 선천적인 덕을 미봉책의 땜질 방식으로 고치지 않습니다. 주님은 내부 사정에 정통하여 마음 속을 잘 알고 전 인간을 재창조하십니다. “너희는 새사람을 입으라.”  즉, 당신의 선천적인 인간 삶이 새 생명과 교제하는데 어울리는 옷을 입고 있는지 확인하십시오. 하나님께서 우리 안에 심겨 주신 생명은 그 자체의 덕들을 개발합니다. 아담의 덕들이 아닌 예수 그리스도의 덕들입니다. 예수님의 부활 생명의 저장고에서 당신의 생명을 꺼내는 법을 당신이 배울 때까지, 성화 이후에 선천적인 덕들과 당신이 가진 어떤 재능에 대한 당신의 신뢰를 하나님이 어떻게 말라 죽게 하시는지 지켜보십시오. 만일 당신이 말라붙는 체험을 하고 있다면 하나님에게 감사하십시오.

주님께서 선천적인 덕들에 대한 신뢰를 부패시키시는 점이 하나님께서 우리 안에서 역사하신다는 증거입니다. 왜냐하면 선천적인 덕들은 우리가 되기로 예정되어 있는 것의 약속들이 아니고 하나님이 인간을 창조하신 것의 자투리들에 불과하기 때문입니다. 하나님께서 선천적인 덕으로는 설명될 수 없는 예수 그리스도의 생명과 우리를 접촉시키려고 늘 애쓰고 계시는 동안, 우리는 선천적인 덕들을 고수하려고 할 것입니다. 하나님의 은혜로 받은 것이 아니고 유전의 행운에 의하여 획득한 것들에 의지하여 하나님을 섬기고 있는 사람들을 보는 것이 가장 슬픈 일입니다. 하나님은 우리의 선천적인 덕들을 쌓아 올려서 그것들을 거룩하게 하는 것이 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 우리의 선천적인 덕들은 결코 예수 그리스도께서 원하시는 것의 가까이에 얼씬도 할 수 없기 때문입니다. 선천적인 사랑과 인내와 깨끗함은 주님의 요구 수준에 결코 달할 수 없습니다. 그러나 우리가 우리의 육신적 삶의 모든 부분을 하나님께서 우리 안에 불어넣으신 새 생명과 조화를 이루게 함에 따라 하나님께서는 주 예수님을 특징지었던 덕들을 우리 안에서 나타내실 것입니다.

 

               그리고 우리가 소유하는 모든 덕은 오로지 주님만의

               자산입니다.

 

    오오 주님, 주님은 언제나 완전하십니다. 또한 저의 신선한 모든

    근원들이 주님에게 있습니다. 주님에게 제가 나아갑니다. 주님의

    위대한 생명이 제 안에서 샘솟게 하셔서 영은 물론 몸 안으로도

    참된 유입이 이루어지도록 역사하시옵소서.
