ALONE WITH GOD?

“When they were alone, He expounded all things to His disciples.”

                                                                                                                          Mark 4:34

 

   Our solitude with Him. Jesus does not take us alone and expound things to us all the time; He expounds things to us as we can understand them. Other lives are parables. God is making us spell out our own souls. It is slow work, so slow that it takes God all time and eternity to make a man and woman after His own purpose. The only way we can be of use to God is to let Him take us through the crooks and crannies of our own characters. It is astounding how ignorant we are about ourselves! We do not know envy when we see it, or laziness, or pride. Jesus reveals to us all that this body has been harbouring before His grace began to work. How many of us have learned to look in with courage?

   We have to get rid of the idea that we understand ourselves; it is the last conceit to go. The only one Who understands us is God. The greatest curse in spiritual life is conceit. If we have ever had a glimpse of what we are like in the sight of God, we shall never say, “Oh, I am so unworthy,” because we shall know we are, beyond the possibility of stating it. As long as we are not quite sure that we are unworthy, God will keep narrowing us in until He gets us alone. Wherever there is any element of pride or of conceit, Jesus cannot expound a thing. He will take us through the disappointment of a wounded pride of intellect, through disappointment of heart. He will reveal inordinate affections-things over which we never thought He would have to get us alone. We listen to many things in classes, but they are not an exception to us yet. They will be when God gets us alone over them.

 

      O Lord, the “multitudes” will be coming and going

     today. Help me to keep, like my Master, in the lonely

     places and pray.

당신 홀로 하나님과 함께 한 적이 있습니까?

“혼자 계실 때에 그 제자들에게 모든 것을 해석하시더라.”

마가복음 4:34

주님과 우리의 동거. 예수님께서는 우리를 홀로 데리고 다니면서 항상 만사를 설명해주시지는 않습니다. 예수님께서는 우리가 이해할 수 있게 설명해주십니다. 다른 사람들의 삶에 관한 내용들은 자세한 설명이 없이는 그 의미를 쉽게 깨달을 수 없는 비유에 불과합니다. 하나님께서는 우리가 우리 영혼에 대해 자세히 설명하도록 역사하고 계십니다. 그것은 더딘 일이므로 하나님께서 하나님 자신의 목적에 맞는 사람들로 만드는데 항상 그리고 영원의 시간이 소요됩니다. 우리가 하나님께 쓸모 있게 되는 유일한 길은 우리 성품의 구석구석을 우리가 익히도록 하나님의 도움을 구하는 것입니다. 우리가 우리 자신에 대해 얼마나 무지한지 놀라운 일입니다! 우리가 직접 부딪쳐볼 때까지는 질투, 게으름, 또는 자존심에 대해서 알지 못합니다. 예수님의 은혜의 사역이 시작되기 전에 예수님께서는 우리 몸이 지녀오고 있는 모든 것을 우리에게 보여주십니다. 우리들 중에서 얼마나 많은 사람이 용기를 가지고 자신이 지닌 성격상의 결점들을 들여다볼 줄 알게 되었습니까?

우리가 자신을 이해하고 있다는 생각을 버리지 않으면 안 됩니다. 이것은 버려야 할 자만심입니다. 우리를 정확하게 아시는 분은 오직 한 분 하나님뿐이십니다. 영적 생활에서 가장 큰 저주는 자만심입니다. 만일 하나님이 보시기에 우리가 어떤 모습인가를 우리가 언뜻 본 적이 있다면 “오오, 나는 별로 가치가 없어,”라고 결코 말하지 못 할 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그렇게 말하는 것조차 못 할 정도로 우리가 어떤 사람인지를 우리가 알아야 할 것이기 때문입니다. 우리가 무익한 존재임을 우리가 확신하지 못하는 한 하나님께서는 우리를 홀로 접촉하실 때까지 계속해서 우리에게 다가오실 것입니다. 자존심 또는 자만심이 조금이라도 살아있는 한 예수님께서는 어떤 것을 설명하실 수가 없습니다. 주님께서는 우리로 하여금 지적 자존심에 상처를 입고 마음이 실망하는 과정을 거치게 하실 것입니다. 주님께서 반드시 우리를 홀로 만나셔서 보여주시리라고 우리가 도저히 생각하지 못했던 과분한 애정을 주님께서 나타내실 것입니다. 우리는 여러 가지 종류의 많은 것들을 경청합니다. 그러나 그것들은 우리에게 아직은 설명이 되지 않습니다. 하나님께서 우리를 홀로 만나주실 때 그것들이 설명이 될 것입니다.

 

       오오 주님, 오늘 일반 대중이 오고 가고 할 것입니다.
