THE OVERMASTERING DIRECTION

“But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;”

Acts 26:16

 The vision Paul had on the road to Damascus was no passing emotion, but a vision that very clear and emphatic directions for him, and he says, “I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision.” Our Lord said, in effect, to Paul-Your whole life is to be by overmastered by Me; you are to have no end, no aim, and no purpose but Mine. “I have chosen him.”

 When we are born again we all have visions, if we are spiritual at all, of what Jesus wants us to be, and the great thing is to learn not to be disobedient to the vision, not to say that it cannot be attained. It is not sufficient to know that God has redeemed the world, and to know that Holy Spirit can make all that Jesus effectual in me; I must have the basis of a personal relationship to Him. Paul was not given a message or a doctrine to proclaim, he was brought into a vivid, personal, overmastering relationship to Jesus Christ. Verse 16 is immensely commanding, “to make thee a minister and a witness.” There is nothing there apart from the personal relationship. Paul was devoted to a Person not to a cause. He was absolutely Jesus Christ’s, he saw nothing else, he lived for nothing else. “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.”

 

     O Lord, enchain me to Thyself with great bonds of

adoring love; enwheel me around with Thy Providence

for Thy purposes; enlarge me until I am more and

more capable of being of use to Thee.

압도하는 명령

“일어나 너의 발로 서라 내가 네게 나타난 것은 곧 네가

                 나를 본 일과 장차 내가 네게 나타날 일에 너로 종과

                  증인을 삼으려 함이니;”

행 26:16

바울이 다메섹 도상에서 체험한 환상은 지나가는 감정이 아니었습니다. 그 환상은 바울에게 아주 분명하고 강력한 명령이었습니다. “하늘에서 보여주신 환상에 내가 불순종하지 아니하였다”라고 바울이 말합니다. 실제로는 “너의 삶 전부를 내가 주관하여야 한다”라고 우리 주께서 바울에게 말씀하신 것입니다. 너는 내 것이 아닌 목적과 목표를 가져서는 안 된다. “내가 너를 선택하였다.”

만일 예수님께서 우리가 어떤 사람이 되기를 원하시는 지에 관해 우리가 어쨌든 영적 안목을 갖고 있다면 우리가 거듭날 때 우리는 모두 환상을 갖게 됩니다. 그리고 중요한 것은 그 환상에 불순종하지 않도록 하는 것이고 그 환상은 성취 불가하다고 말하지 않도록 해야 하는 것입니다. 하나님께서 세상을 구원하셨다고 아는 것으로 충분하지 않고 또한 예수님께서 행하신 모든 것이 내 안에서 효력을 발생할 수 있는 것은 성령의 역사라는 사실을 아는 것으로도 충분하지 않습니다. 나는 주님과 인격적인 관계의 기초를 가지지 않으면 안 됩니다. 바울에게는 선포할 메시지 또는 교리가 주어지지 않았습니다. 바울은 예수 그리스도에 대한 생생하고 인격적이고 권위적인 관계 속으로 인도되었습니다. “너를 종과 증인으로 삼으려고,” 라는 사도행전 26장 16절은 말씀은 대단히 명령조 입니다. 거기에는 인격적인 관계 말고는 아무 것도 없습니다. 바울은 어떤 주의나 대의명분이 아닌 어떤 인격적 존재에게 자기의 모든 것을 내맡겼던 것입니다. 바울은 철저하게 예수 그리스도의 소유였습니다. 바울은 다른 아무 것도 바라보지 않았으며 다른 어떤 것을 위해서도 살지 않았습니다. “내가 너희 중에서 예수 그리스도와 그가 십자가에 못 박히신 것 외에는 아무 것도 알지 아니하기로 작정하였음이라”(고전 2:2).

 

    오오 주님, 찬송하는 사랑의 위대한 끈으로 저를 주님에게

묶어주시옵소서. 주님의 목적을 위하여 주님의 섭리로써 저를

에워싸주시옵소서. 제가 주님에게 쓸모 있는 존재로 더욱 더

능력을 발휘할 수 있기까지 제 지경을 확장하여 주시옵소서.
