IS IT NOT IN THE LEAST LIKELY?

“For Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not

                                               after Absalom."

                                                                                                                                 1 Kings 2:28

 

   Joab stood the big test, he remained absolutely loyal and true to David and did not turn after the fascinating and ambitious Absalom, but yet towards the end of his life he turned after the craven Adonijah. Always remain alert to the fact that where one man has gone back is exactly anyone may go back (see 1 Cor. 10:13). You have gone through the big crisis, now be alert over the least things, take into calculation the "retired sphere of the leasts."

   We are apt to say—"It is not in the least likely that having been through the supreme crisis, I shall turn now to the things of the world." Do not forecast where the temptation will come, it is the least likely thing that is the peril. In the aftermath of a great spiritual transaction the "retired sphere of the leasts" begins to tell; it is not dominant, but remember it is there, and if you are not warned, it will trip you up. You have remained true to God under great and intense trials, now beware of the undercurrent. Do not be morbidly introspective, looking forward with dread, but keep alert; keep your memory bright before God. Unguarded strength is double weakness because that is where the "retired sphere of the leasts" saps. The Bible characters fell on their strong points, never on their weak ones.

   "Kept by the power of God"—that is the only safety.

 

   Lord, this day I have to preach in Thy name; make

   it radiant with Thy power. Draw out my soul into the

   great realization of Thyself, keep me centralized in

   Thee in every deep and final sense.

“요압이 압살롬을 따르지 아니하였으나 아도니야를 따랐음이더라”

                                                                                                                                 열왕기상 2:28

 

   요압은 큰 시험을 만났다. 그는 다윗에게 충성했고 진실했다. 그래서 매력적이고 야망을 가진 압살롬을 따르지 않았다. 그렇지만 그의 생애 말경에는 비겁한 아도니야를 따랐다. 어떤 사람이 실수하면 누구든지 실수할 수 있다는 사실을 항상 염두에 두라(고전 10:13 참조). 당신은 큰 위기를 겪었다. 이제는 작은 일들을 조심하라. “외딴 곳에 있는 사소한 일들”을 조심하라.

   “최고의 위기를 겪었으니 나는 이제 세속에 물들 리가 조금도 없다”라고 우리가 말하기 쉽다. 유혹이 발생할 경우 따르는 위험은 아주 작을 것이라고 예측하지 말라. 큰 영적교류를 거친 직후 시기에는 “외딴 곳에 있는 사소한 일들”이 나타나기 시작한다. 눈에 크게 띄지는 않지만 그것이 존재한다는 사실을 기억하라. 그러므로 만일 당신이 경고를 받지 않으면 그것이 당신을 걸려 넘어지게 할 것이다. 당신은 크고 심각한 시련 가운데 하나님께 진실했다. 이제는 표면에 나타나지 않는 것들을 조심하라. 병적으로 내성적이 되어 소심해지지 말라. 겁에 질려 바라보지 말라. 그러나 깨어 있으라. 하나님 앞에서 기억력을 밝게 유지하라. 방심하고 있는 강함은 두 배의 약함을 초래하는 위험성이 있다. 성경에 나오는 인물들은 그들의 약점 때문에 넘어진 게 아니고 강점으로 인해 넘어졌다.

   “하나님의 능력에 계속 붙잡혀 있는” 것이 안전이 보장되는 유일한 방법이다.

 

   주님, 오늘 제가 주님의 이름으로 설교해야 합니다. 그 설교가

   주님의 능력으로 빛을 발하게 하옵소서. 주님 자신을 훌륭하게

   실현할 수 있도록 제 영혼을 이끌어주시옵소서. 모든 심오하고

   온전한 판단력에 있어서 제가 계속 주님께 의존하게 하옵소서.
