THE LIGHT THAT FAILS

“We all with open face beholding...the glory of the Lord."

                                                                                                               2 Corinthians 3:18

 

   A servant of God must stand so much alone that he never knows he is alone. In the first phases of Christian life disheartments come, people who used to be lights flicker out, and those who used to stand with us pass away. We have to get so used to it that we never know we standing alone. "All men forsook me...notwithstanding the Lord stood with me" (2 Tim. 4:16-17). We must build our faith, not on the fading light, but on the light that never fails. When "big" men go we are sad, until we see that they are meant to go, the one thing that remains is looking in the face of God for ourselves. 

   Allow nothing to keep you from looking God sternly in the face about yourself and about your doctrine, and everytime you preach see that you look God in the face about things first, then the glory will remain all through. A Christian worker is one who perpetually looks in the face of God and then goes forth to talk to people. The characteristic of the ministry of Christ is that of unconscious glory that abides. "Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him."

   We are never called on to parade our doubts or to express the hidden ecstasies of our life with God. The secret of the worker's life is that he keeps in tune with God all the time.

 

   O Lord, my God, how wonderfully and powerfully

   Thou hast caused me to know with a knowledge that

   passes knowledge that redemption is the one great

   revelation Reality.

시드는 빛

“우리가 다 수건을 벗은 얼굴로...주의 영광을 보매.”

                                                                                                             고린도후서 3:18

 

   하나님의 종은 외톨이 임을 조금도 느끼지 못할 정도로 철저하게 혼자서 지내야 한다. 그리스도인의 삶의 초기 단계에 의기 소침이 찾아 든다. 빛이라고 여겼던 사람들이 가물거리고 우리와 함께 했던 사람들이 사라진다. 홀로 지내고 있는 것을 우리가 조금도 자각하지 못할 정도로 우리는 그러한 현실에 익숙해지지 않으면 안 된다. “모든 사람들이 나를 버렸다...그럼에도 불구하고 주님께서는 나와 함께 계셨다”(딤후 4:16-17). 우리는 시들어가는 빛이 아니라 절대로 시들지 않는 빛 위에 우리의 믿음을 세워야 한다. 죽음이 운명이라는 것을 우리가 이해할 때까지는 “위대한” 사람들이 떠날 때 슬프다. 여전히 그대로 변하지 않는 한 가지는 우리를 향한 하나님의 얼굴을 바라보고 있는 것이다.

   어떠한 이유로든 당신 자신과 당신의 교리에 관해 관심을 갖고 계신 하나님의 표정을 계속 엄격하게 살피는 일이 없도록 하라. 그리고 당신이 설교할 때마다 사건에 대한 하나님의 뜻이 무엇인지 먼저 하나님의 표정을 살피라. 그리하면 하나님의 영광이 충만하게 유지될 것이다. 그리스도인 사역자는 끊임없이 하나님의 표정을 살피고 그런 다음에 사람들에게 말을 거는 존재이다. 그리스도의 사역의 특징은 본인이 의식하지 못하는 영광이 계속 머물러 있다는 점이다. “모세는 자기가 여호와와 말하였음으로 말미암아 얼굴 피부에 광채가 나나 깨닫지 못하였더라”(출 34:29).

   우리는 우리의 의문점들을 과시하거나 하나님과의 우리 삶에서 숨겨진 황홀한 체험들을 나타내라고 결코 부름 받지 아니한다. 사역자의 삶의 비밀은 항상 하나님과 조화를 이룬다는 것이다.

 

   오 주 나의 하나님, 주님께서는 구속은 계시된 하나의

   위대한 실체라는 것을 지식을 전하는 성경지식을 가지고

   저로 하여금 얼마나 경이롭고 강력하게 알게 하셨는지요.
