SERVICE OF PASSIONATE DEVOTION

“Lovest thou Me? . . . Feed My sheep.”

                                                                                                                 John 21:16        

 

Jesus did not say—Make converts to your way of thinking, but look after My sheep, see that they get nourished in the knowledge of Me. We count as service what we do in the way of Christian work; Jesus Christ calls service what we are to Him, not what we do for Him. Discipleship is based on devotion to Jesus Christ, not on adherence to a belief or a creed. “If any man come to Me and hate not …, he cannot be My disciple.” There is no argument and no compulsion, but simply—If you would be My disciple, you must be devoted to Me. A man touched by the Spirit of God suddenly says—“Now I see Who Jesus is,” and that is the source of devotion.

To-day we have substituted creedal belief for personal belief, and that is why so many are devoted to causes and so few devoted to Jesus, but only to the cause He started. Jesus Christ is a source of deep offence to the educated mind of to-day that does not want Him in any other way than as a Comrade. Our Lord’s first obedience was to the will of His Father, not to the needs of men; the saving of men was the natural outcome of His obedience to the Father. If I am devoted to the cause of humanity only, I will soon be exhausted and come to the place where my love will falter; but if I love Jesus Christ personally and passionately, I can serve humanity though men treat me as a door-mat. The secret of a disciple’s life is devotion to Jesus Christ, and the characteristic of the life is its unobtrusiveness. It is like a corn of wheat, which falls into the ground and dies, but presently it will spring up and alter the whole landscape (John 12:24)

열정적인 헌신의 섬김

“네가 나를 사랑하느냐…내 양을 치라.”

                                요한복음 21:16

 

예수님께서는 당신의 사고방식에 대한 개종자들을 만들라고 말씀하신 게 아니고 주님의 양떼를 돌봐 예수님을 올바로 알도록 양육하라는 의미로 말씀하셨다. 그리스도인 사역에 관하여 우리가 실행하는 것을 섬김이라고 우리는 생각한다. 예수 그리스도께서는 주님에 대한 우리의 관계를 섬김으로 부르시는 것이지 우리가 주님을 위해 무엇을 하는가를 섬김으로 부르시는 게 아니다. 제자의 신분은 교리 또는 신조에 대한 충성이 아닌 예수 그리스도에 대한 헌신을 근거로 하여 세워진다. “무릇 내게 오는 자가 …까지 미워하지 아니하면, 내 제자가 될 수 없다”(눅 14:26). 논쟁할 것도 없고 강제할 것도 없다. 그러나 만일 네가 내 제자가 되고자 하면 다만 나에게 헌신하지 않으면 안 된다. 성령으로 감동된 사람은 “예수님이 어떤 분이신지 내가 이제 비로소 알겠습니다.”라고 갑자기 말한다. 그리하여 바로 그것이 헌신의 근원이 된다.

오늘날 우리는 인격적 신앙 대신 신조 중심의 신앙으로 바꿨다. 그것이 그토록 많은 사람들이 대의들에 전념하고 극히 소수가 예수 그리스도에 헌신하는 이유다. 사람들은 예수님에게 헌신하기를 원하지 않고 예수님께서 시작하셨던 대의에게만 헌신하기 원한다. 동료가 아닌 다른 모양으로는 예수 그리스도를 원하지 않는 오늘날의 교양 있는 마음을 가진 사람들에게는 예수 그리스도는 난해한 공격의 근원이 된다. 우리 주님의 첫 번째 순종은 사람들의 요구가 아닌 그의 아버지 하나님의 뜻에 따르는 것이었다. 사람들의 구원은 그가 아버지 하나님에게 순종함으로 인해 얻어진 당연한 결과였다. 만일 내가 인간애라는 대의에만 헌신한다면 나는 곧 기진맥진하게 되어 나의 사랑이 쇠퇴하게 되는 지경에 이를 것이다. 그러나 내가 만일 예수 그리스도를 인격적으로 열정적으로 사랑한다면 사람들이 나를 하찮은 존재로 취급할지라도 나는 인간애 증진에 도움이 되는 역할을 할 수 있다. 제자의 삶의 비밀은 예수 그리스도에 대한 헌신이며 삶의 특징은 겸손이다. 그것은 땅에 떨어져 죽지만 머지않아 싹이 터 많은 열매를 맺음으로써 모든 풍경을 바꿔놓을 한 알의 밀과 같은 삶이다(요 12:24).

 

주님으로 충만하게 될 때까지 제 영을 만져주시옵소서.

제 마음이 그리스도 예수 안에 함께 거하도록 형성될 때까지

제 마음을 통해 생각하시옵소서.
