THE INEVITABLE PENALTY

“Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out

                            thence, till thou have paid the uttermost farthing.”

                                                                                                Matthew 5:26

 

There is no heaven with a little of hell in it. God is determined to make you pure and holy and right; he will not allow you to escape for one moment from the scrutiny of the Holy Spirit. He urged you to come to judgment right away when He convicted you, but you did not; the inevitable process began to work and now you are in prison, and you will only get out when you have paid the uttermost farthing. “Is this a God of mercy, and of love?” you say. Seen from God’s side, it is a glorious ministry of love. God is going to bring you out pure and spotless and undefiled; but He wants you to recognize the disposition you were showing—the disposition of your right to yourself. The moment you are willing that God should alter your disposition, His re-creating forces will begin to work. The moment you realize God’s purpose, which is to get you rightly related to Himself and then to your fellow men, He will tax the last limit of the universe to help you take the right road. Decide it now—“Yes, Lord, I will write that letter tonight”; “I will be reconciled to that man now.”

These messages of Jesus Christ are for the will and the conscience, not for the head. If you dispute the Sermon on the Mount with your head, you will blunt the appeal to your heart.

“I wonder why I don’t go on with God!” Are you paying your debts from God’s standpoint? Do now what you will have to do some day. Every moral call has an “ought” behind it.

 

“I would, O Lord, see Thy Face and know Thy power

and thrilling grace. Draw nigh my life in full

recuperation, and forgive me for the neglect of Thy

ways in external details.

필연적인 형벌

“진실로 네게 이르노니 네가 한 푼이라도 남김 없이 다

                             갚기 전에는 결코 거기서 나오지 못하리라.”

                                          마태복음 5:26

 

작은 구석에 지옥이 들어 있는 천국은 존재하지 않는다. 하나님께서는 당신을 순결하고 거룩하고 의롭게 만들기로 결심하신다. 주님은 당신으로 하여금 성령의 감시로부터 한 순간이라도 도망치게 놔두지 않으실 것이다. 하나님께서 당신의 유죄를 증명했을 때 즉시 심판을 받으러 나오라고 거듭 권유하셨지만 당신은 순종하지 않았다. 필연적인 과정이 진행되기 시작하여 지금 당신은 감옥에 갇혀 있다. 당신이 한 푼이라도 남김 없이 다 갚았을 경우에만 감옥에서 나오게 될 것이다. “이것이 긍휼의, 그리고 사랑의 하나님인가?” 라고 당신은 말한다. 하나님의 입장에서 볼 때는 그것이 영광스러운 사랑의 사역이다. 하나님께서는 당신을 순결하고 흠 없고 더럽혀지지 않은 상태로 만드실 것이다. 그러나 당신이 보여주고 있었던 당신 자신의 권리에 속하는 성질을 당신이 인정하기를 하나님께서 원하신다. 하나님께서 당신의 성질을 바꿔주시기를 당신이 진심으로 원하는 순간 재창조하시는 하나님의 능력이 역사하기 시작한다. 당신으로 하여금 하나님과 올바른 관계를 맺게 한 다음 동료들과 올바른 관계를 맺도록 하는 것이 하나님의 목적임을 당신이 깨닫게 되는 순간 우주의 마지막 한도까지 짜내어 하나님께서 당신이 바른 길을 걷도록 도우실 것이다. 지금 그것을 결정하여, “예, 주님, 오늘밤 제가 그 편지를 쓰겠습니다”, “제가 지금 그 사람과 화해하겠습니다.”라고 말하라.

예수 그리스도의 이러한 메시지들은 머리를 위한 것이 아니고 의지와 양심을 위한 것이다. 만일 당신이 산상수훈을 머리로 다툰다면 당신의 마음에 대한 산상수훈의 호소력을 둔화시킬 것이다.

“내가 하나님과 계속 동행하지 않는 이유가 무엇일까?” 하나님의 관점에서 볼 때 당신은 자신의 빚을 갚고 있는가? 어느 날 당신이 해야 할 일을 지금 실천하라. 모든 도덕적 소명은 그 배후에 “당위성”을 가지고 있다.

 

오 주님, 제가 당신의 얼굴을 보고 당신의 능력과 은혜를 알고자

합니다. 제 생명 가까이 오셔 완전히 소생시켜주시옵소서. 외부적인

상세한 항목들에 관한 주님의 방법들을 무시한 저를 용서해주시옵소서.
