AFTER GOD’S SILENCE—WHAT?

 “When He had heard therefore that he was sick, He abode

                                two days in the same place where he was.”

                                                                                                 John 11:6

 

Has God trusted you with a silence—a silence that is big with meaning? God’s silences are His answers. Think of those days of absolute silence in the home at Bethany! Is there anything analogous to those days in your life? Can God trust like that, or are still asking for a visible answer? God will give you the blessings you ask if you will not go any further without them; but His silence is the sign that He is bringing you into a marvelous understanding of Himself. Are you mourning before God because you have not had an audible response? You will find that God has trusted you in the most intimate way possible, with an absolute silence, not of despair, but of pleasure, because He saw that you could stand a bigger revelation. If God has given you a silence, praise Him, He is bringing you into the great run of His purposes. The manifestation of the answer in time is a matter of God’s sovereignty. Time is nothing to God. For a while you said—“I asked God to give me bread, and He gave me a stone.” He did not, and to-day you find He gave you the bread of life.

A wonderful thing about God’s silence is that the contagion of His stillness gets into you and you become perfectly confident—“I know God has heard me.” His silence is the proof that He has. As long as you have the idea that God will bless you in answer to prayer, He will do it, but He will never give you the grace of silence. If Jesus Christ is bringing you into the understanding that prayer is for the glorifying of His father, He will give you the first sign of His intimacy—silence.

 

O Lord, bless me this hour with the glow of Thy

presence and sense of Thy nearness. I do trust only in

Thee, yet I long for conscious delight in Thy presence,

if Thou wilt vouchsafe it to me.

 하나님의 침묵 뒤에 무엇이?

“그가 병들었다 함을 들으시고 그 계시던 곳에

                                 이틀을 더 유하시고.”

                                       요한복음 11:6

 

중요한 의미가 담긴 침묵으로 하나님께서 당신을 신뢰하신 적이 있는가? 하나님의 침묵은 그의 응답이다. 베다니 가정에서의 철저한 침묵의 세월들을 생각해보라! 당신의 삶에 무언가 그러한 세월들과 비슷한 것이 있는가? 그것처럼 하나님께서 당신을 신뢰하실 수 있는가? 그렇지 않으면 당신은 눈에 보이는 응답을 아직도 구하고 있는 중인가? 그들이 없으면 당신이 더 앞으로 나아가지 않을 것 같으면 당신이 구하는 축복을 하나님께서 주실 것이다. 그러나 하나님의 침묵은 하나님에 대한 경이로운 이해 속으로 당신을 이끌고 계시다는 징후다. 당신은 들을 수 있는 답변을 받지 못했다 해서 하나님 앞에서 슬퍼하고 있는 중인가? 절망이 아니고 기쁨이 담긴 철저한 침묵과 함께 실행할 수 있는 가장 친밀한 방법으로 하나님께서 당신을 신뢰하셨다는 것을 깨닫게 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 당신이 더 큰 계시를 감당할 수 있다고 하나님께서 이해하셨기 때문이다. 만일 하나님께서 당신에게 침묵하셨다면 그를 찬양하라. 하나님께서는 당신을 그의 목적들의 위대한 발전 속으로 인도하고 계시는 중이다. 제시간에 답변을 발표하는 것은 하나님의 주권에 속한 문제다. 시간은 하나님에게 전혀 문제가 되지 아니한다. “나는 하나님에게 떡을 달라고 요구했다. 그런데 돌을 주셨다.”라고 당신은 잠시 말했다. 하나님께서 그렇게 하지 않으셨다. 오늘 당신은 하나님께서 당신에게 생명의 떡을 주셨음을 깨닫게 된다.

하나님의 침묵에 관해 놀라운 일은 그의 침묵의 영향이 당신 안으로 전염되어 “하나님께서 나의 기도를 들으셨다는 걸 내가 알고 있다.”라고 말하여 당신이 완전히 확신을 갖게 된다는 점이다. 그의 침묵은 그가 당신의 기도를 들으셨다는 증거다. 기도에 응답하여 하나님께서 당신을 축복하실 것이라는 생각을 당신이 하는 동안 하나님께서는 그것을 행하실 것이다. 그러나 당신에게 침묵이라는 은총을 주시지는 않을 것이다. 만일 예수 그리스도께서 기도가 자기 아버지를 영화롭게 하기 위한 것이라는 이해 속으로 당신을 인도하고 계시는 중이라면 그의 친밀함의 첫 번째 징후로서 침묵을 당신에게 주실 것이다.

 

오 주님, 당신의 임재의 훈훈함과 친밀감으로 축복해주옵소서.

제가 당신만 신뢰합니다. 당신이 만일 허락하신다면, 아직도

당신의 임재 안에서 환희를 뚜렷이 맛보기를 갈망합니다.
