THE KEY TO MISSIONARY

DEVOTION

“For His name’s sake they went forth.”

                                                                                 3 John 7

 

Our Lord has told us how love to Him is to manifest itself. “Lovest thou Me?” “Feed My sheep”—identify yourself with My interests in other people, not, identify Me with your interests in other people. First Corinthians 13:4-8 gives the character of this love, it is the love of God expressing itself. The test of my love for Jesus is the practical one, all the rest is sentimental jargon.

Loyalty to Jesus Christ is the supernatural work of Redemption wrought in me by the Holy Ghost Who sheds abroad the love of God in my heart, and that love works efficaciously through me in contact with everyone I meet. I remain loyal to His Name although every common-sense fact gives the lie to Him, and declares that He has no more power than a morning mist.

The key to missionary devotion means being attached to nothing and no one saving Our Lord Himself, not being detached from things externally. Our Lord was amazingly in and out among ordinary things; His detachment was on the inside towards God. External detachment is often an indication of a secret vital attachment to the things we keep away from externally.

The loyalty of a missionary is to keep his soul concentratedly open to the nature of the Lord Jesus Christ. The men and women Our Lord sends out on His enterprises are the ordinary human stuff, plus dominating devotion to Himself wrought by the Holy Ghost.

 

Lord, I thank Thee for Thy counsel not to fret myself

into conscious usefulness, but just do as the occasion

Thou hast engineered shall serve.

“그들이 주의 이름을 위하여 나갔다.”

                                                요한삼서 7

 

주님에 대한 사랑이 어떻게 분명하게 나타나야 하는지 우리 주님께서 말씀하셨다. “네가 나를 사랑하느냐?” “내 양을 치라” 즉, 다른 사람들에 대한 너희 관심에 나를 일치시키지 말고 다른 사람들에 대한 나의 관심에 너희 스스로를 일치시키라. 고린도전서 13장 4-8절은 이 사랑의 특징을 설명한다. 그것은 스스로 표현하는 하나님의 사랑이다. 예수님에 대한 나의 사랑의 시험은 실제적인 것이다. 나머지는 모두 감상적인 용어다.

예수 그리스도에 대한 충성은 나의 마음 속에 하나님의 사랑을 널리 부어주시는 성령을 통해 내 안에 형성된 구속의 초자연적 역사의 산물이다. 그리하여 그 사랑은 내가 만나는 모든 사람과의 접촉 안에서 나를 통해 효능을 발휘한다. 모든 상식적인 사실이 주님을 거짓이라 하고 아침 안개보다 더 큰 능력이 없다고 선언할지라도 나는 주님의 이름에 여전히 충성을 바친다.

선교사 헌신의 비결은 외적으로는 사물로부터 분리되지 않을지라도 마음으로는 아무것에도 그리고 우리 주님 자신을 제외하고는 누구에게도 집착하지 않는 상태를 의미한다. 우리 주님께서는 평범한 것들 사이에서 놀라울 정도로 철저하셨다. 우리 주님의 분리는 하나님을 향한 마음 속에 있었다. 외적 분리는 흔히 우리가 외적으로 피하는 사항에 대해 비밀의 중대한 애착을 갖고 있다는 징후다.

선교사의 충성은 주 예수 그리스도의 본성을 향해 그의 영혼을 집중적으로 항상 열어놓는 것이다. 우리 주님께서 그의 사역을 위해 파견하는 남자와 여자들은 평범한 인간적 소질에, 성령을 통해 만들어진 탁월한 헌신이 곁들여진 사람들이다.

 

주님, 유용한 존재가 되려고 안달하지 말고 주님께서

섭리하신 기회가 허락하는 대로 행동하라고 권고하여

주심에 대해 감사 드립니다.
