IS GOD’S WILL MY WILL?

“This is the will of God, even your sanctification.”

                                          1 Thessalonians 4:3

 

It is not a question of whether God is willing to sanctify me; is it my will? Am I willing to let God do in me all that has been made possible by the Atonement? Am I willing to let Jesus be made sanctification to me, and to let the life of Jesus be manifested in my mortal flesh? Beware of saying—Oh, I am longing to be sanctified. You are not, stop longing and make it matter of transaction—“Nothing in my hands I bring.” Receive Jesus Christ to be made sanctification to you in implicit faith, and the great marvel of the Atonement of Jesus will be made real in you. All that Jesus made possible is made mine by the free loving gift of God on the ground of what He performed, my attitude as a saved and sanctified soul is that of profound humble holiness (there is no such thing as proud holiness), a holiness based on agonizing repentance and a sense of unspeakable shame and degradation; and also on the amazing realization that the love of God commended itself to me in that while I cared nothing about Him, He completed everything for my salvation and sanctification (see Rom. 5:8. RV). No wonder Paul says nothing is “able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Sanctification makes me one with Jesus Christ, and in Him one with God, and it is done only through the superb Atonement of Christ. Never put the effect as the cause. The effect in me is obedience and service and prayer, and is the outcome of speechless thanks and adoration for the marvelous sanctification wrought out in me because of the Atonement.

 

“Thy touch has still its ancient power”; touch me,

Lord, into fellowship with Thyself till my whole being

glows with Thy peace and joy.

 하나님의 뜻이 나의 뜻이 되는가?

“하나님의 뜻은 이것이니 너희의 거룩함이라.”

                                 데살로니가전서 4:3

 

하나님께서 기꺼이 나를 성화시키실 것인가의 여부가 문제되는 것이 아니다. 그것이 나의 뜻인가 하는 것이 문제다. 속죄를 통해 가능해진 모든 것을 내 안에서 하나님께서 행하시도록 내가 기꺼이 허락할 뜻이 있는가? 예수님의 형상으로 내가 성화되도록 기꺼이 허락할 용의가 있는가, 그리하여 예수님의 생명이 죽을 수밖에 없는 나의 육신에 나타나도록 기꺼이 허락하는가? 오, 나는 성화되기를 갈망하고 있다고 말하는 것을 조심하라. 당신은 성화를 갈망하고 있지 않다. 갈망하는 것을 중단하고 그것을 화해의 문제로 삼으라. 즉, “(화해를 위해) 내 손에 내가 가져 오는 것이 아무것도 없다.” 절대적인 믿음으로 예수 그리스도를 영접하여 당신에 대한 성화로 삼으라. 그러면 예수님의 속죄의 위대한 경이가 당신 안에서 생생한 현실로 나타날 것이다. 예수님께서 성취하신 것을 근거로 하여 하나님께서 값없이 주시는 사랑의 선물을 통해 예수님께서 가능하도록 만들었던 모든 것이 나의 소유로 만들어진다. 구원 받고 성화된 영혼으로서 나의 태도는 심오한 겸손을 지닌 거룩함의 태도다 (자랑스런 거룩함이란 존재하지 않는다), 통회의 회개와 말할 수 없는 타락과 수치감을 근거로 하고, 또한 내가 주님에 대해서 아무 관심도 없는 동안에 주님께서는 나의 구원과 성화를 위해 모든 것을 성취하셨다(롬 5:8참조)는 사실에서 하나님의 사랑이 내 마음에 들었다는 놀라운 깨달음을 근거로 하는 거룩함이다. 따라서 바울이 아무것도 “우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑에서 우리를 끊을 수 없다”(롬 8:39)고 말하는 것은 당연하다.

성화는 나를 예수 그리스도와 하나로 만든다. 그리고 예수 그리스도 안에서 나를 하나님과 하나로 만든다. 그런데 그것은 그리스도의 굉장한 신비의 속죄를 통해서만 이루어진다. 절대로 효과를 원인으로 삼지 말라. 내 안에 있는 효과는 순종과 섬김과 기도다. 또한 속죄 때문에 내 안에서 이루어진 놀랄만한 성화에 대한 말할 수 없는 감사와 찬양의 성과를 자아낸다.

 

“주님의 만짐은 옛날의 능력 그대로 입니다.” 나의 전 존재가

주님의 평강과 희락으로 달아오르기 까지, 주님, 저를 만져 주님과

교통하도록 역사하시옵소서.
