THE WORKER’S RULING PASSION

“Wherefore we labour that . . . we may be accepted of Him.”

2 Corinthians 5:9

 

“Wherefore we labour . . .” It is arduous work to keep the master ambition in front. It means holding one’s self to the high ideal year in and year out, not being ambitious to win souls or to establish churches or to have revivals, but being ambitious only to be “accepted of Him.” It is not lack of spiritual experience that leads to failure, but lack of labouring to keep the ideal right. once a week at least take stock before God, and see whether you are keeping your life up to the standard He wishes. Paul is like a musician who does not need the approval of the audience if he can catch the look of approval from his Master.

Any ambition which is in the tiniest degree away from this central one of being “approved unto God” may end in our being castaways. Learn to discern where the ambition leads, and you will see why it is so necessary to live facing the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul says—“Lest my body should make me take another line, I am constantly watching so that I may bring it into subjection and keep it under” (1 Cor. 9:27).

I have to learn to relate everything to the master ambition, and to maintain it without any cessation. My worth to God in public is what I am in private. Is my master ambition to please Him and be acceptable to Him, or is it something less, no matter how noble?

 

  O Lord, I thank Thee for the verse this morning─”Therefore turn

thee to thy God; keep mercy and judgment, wait on thy God continually.”

Fill all this vast encampment with Thy glorious presence; restrain,

and inspire godliness.

“그런즉 우리는 주님을 기쁘시게 하는 자가 되기를 힘쓰노라.”

고린도후서 5:9

“그런즉 우리는 힘쓰노라…” 가장 큰 포부를 항상 앞에 있도록 유지하는 일은 힘든 일입니다. 그것은 영혼을 구원하거나 또는 교회를 세우거나 부흥하기를 열망하는 것이 아니고 주님에게 인정 받기만을 열망하며 세월이 감에 따라 자기 자신을 높은 이상에 붙들어 매고 있음을 의미합니다. 실패하게 되는 것은 영적 체험이 없어서가 아니고 이상을 올바로 유지하도록 힘쓰지 않기 때문입니다. 적어도 일주일에 한번은 가지고 있는 것을 하나님 앞으로 가지고 가서 주님께서 원하시는 기준에 맞게 당신이 계속 살아가고 있는지 확인하십시오. 바울은 그가 만일 주인으로부터 찬성하신다는 눈길을 붙잡을 수 있다면 청중의 칭찬을 필요로 하지 않는 음악가와 같습니다.

“하나님에게 인정 받는다”는 이 중심이 되는 기준으로부터 조금이라도 벗어나는 어떠한 야망도 끝내는 우리를 버림 받는 존재로 전락시킬 수 있습니다. 야망이 어디로 인도하는지 분별하는 방법을 배우십시오. 그러면 주 예수 그리스도를 대면하고 사는 것이 왜 그토록 필요한지 당신이 알게 될 것입니다. ”내 몸이 나로 하여금 다른 노선을 취하지 않도록, 내가 내 몸을 쳐 복종하도록 내가 끊임없이 감시하고 있습니다”(고전 9:27) 라고 바울은 말합니다.

나는 모든 것을 가장 큰 포부에 연관시키고 어떠한 중단도 없이 연계된 그 상태를 유지하는 방법을 배워야 합니다. 하나님에 대한 나의 공적 가치는 나의 사적인 가치와 동일합니다. 나의 가장 큰 포부가 주님을 기쁘게 하여 주님의 인정을 받을 수 있는가, 그렇지 않으면 아무리 고상해도 무엇인가 부족한 것인가?

 

    오오 주님, 오늘 다음 구절의 말씀 때문에 주님께 감사 드립니다─

”그러므로 너의 하나님 쪽으로 방향을 바꾸라. 자비와 정의를 지키고

끊임없이 너의 하나님을 기다리라.” 이 방대한 야영지 모두를 주님의

영광스런 임재로 충만하게 하옵소서. 욕망을 억제하라, 그리고 하나님의

말씀에 순종하는 신앙심을 고취시켜라.
