6장 온유한 사람들은 복이 있나니

“사람의 심령이 가난해지지 않고는 결코 온유할 수 없습니다. 자기가 악한 죄인임을 보지 못하고서는 결코 온유할 수 없습니다. 이렇게 다른 것들이 온유에 앞서 먼저 와야 하는 것입니다. 나의 죄성 때문에 가난한 심령과 애통을 통하여 나 자신에 대한 바른 견해를 갖게 될 때에만 교만은 없어질 수 있음을 깨닫게 되는 것입니다.”

“A man can never be meek unless he is poor in spirit. A man can never be meek unless he has seen himself as a vile sinner. These other things must come first. But when I have that true view of myself in terms of poverty of spirit, and mourning because of my sinfulness, I am led on to see that there must be an absence of pride."

“온유한 사람은 자기를 자랑스럽게 여기는 사람이 아니요, 어떤 의미에서든 자랑하는 사람이 아닙니다. 자기에게는 자랑할 만한 것이 하나도 없다고 느낌니다. 동시에 온유한 사람은 자기를 주장하지 않습니다. 여러분은 온유가 ‘자기를 주장하라’, ‘자기를 표현하라’고 말하는 오늘의 인기 심리학을 부정하는 말임을 압니다.”

"The meek man is not proud of himself, he does not in any sense glory in himself. He feels that there is nothing in himself of which he can boast. It also means that he does not assert himself. You see, it is a negation of the popular psychology of the day which says 'assert yourself', 'express your personality'."     

“온유한 사람은 또 자기를 위해 아무 것도 요구하지 않습니다. 그는 자기의 모든 권리를 청구물로 취급하지 않습니다. 그는 자기의 지위나 특권이나 소유물이나 신분을 요구하지 않습니다.”

"The meek man likewise does not demand anything for himself. He does not take all his rights as claims. He does not make demands for his position, his privileges, his possessions, his status in life."

“온유한 사람은 자기 자신에 대하여 민감하지 않습니다. 자기 자신이나 자기의 이익을 언제나 살피지는 않습니다............. 온유한 사람은 자신에 대해 다른 사람들이 말하는 것에 대해 염려하지 않습니다. 참된 온유는 우리 자신을 더 이상 방어하지 않는 것을 의미합니다. 방어할 만큼 가치있는  것이 우리 속에 없기 때문입니다. 그러므로 방어자세를 취하지 않습니다................. 환언하면 온유하다는 것은 여러분이 여러분 자신에 대하여 끝을 내고 어떤 권리나 공적도 갖고 있지 못한 사실을 보게 됨을 의미합니다.”

“the man who is meek is not even sensitive about himself. He is not always watching himself and his own interests. He is not always on the defensive. We all know about this, do we not? .................. But when a man becomes meek he has finished with all that; he no longer worries about himself and what other people say. To be truly meek means we no longer protect ourselves, because we see there is nothing worth defending. So we are not on the defensive; all that is gone. ................... To be meek, in other words, means that you have finished with yourself altogether, and you come to see you have no rights or deserts at all."

    

“그러므로 저는 온유를 이렇게 다시 정의하고 싶습니다. 참으로 온유한 사람은 하나님과 다른 사람이 어떻게 하든 그에 대해서 고맙게 생각하는 사람입니다. 이것이 온유의 본질이라 생각됩니다. ”

"Once again, therefore, I would define meekness like this. The man who is truly meek is the one who is amazed that God and man think of him as well as they do and treat him as well as they do. That, it seems to me, is its essential quality."

“죄를 짓고 매를 맞으면서 참으면 그것이 영광이 못되지만 선을 행하다가 고통을 당하면서 참으면 하나님 보시기에 아름다운 일이라고 했습니다. 이것이 온유입니다.”

"There is no credit, if, when we are buffeted for our faults, we take it patiently; but if we do well and suffer for it and take it patiently, then that is the thing that is praiseworthy in the sight of God. That is meekness."

  

“온유는 우리가 귀를 기울여 배울 자세가 되어 있음과 우리가 다른 사람들에게 귀를 기우려 우리 자신과 우리 능력이 아무 것도 아니라는 생각을 품고 있음을 의미합니다. 무엇보다 성령의 가르침을 받고 주 예수 그리스도의 인도를 받을 준비가 되어야 합니다. 온유는 항상 배우려는 영을 의미합니다.”

"But it also means that we are ready to listen and to learn; that we have such a poor idea of ourselves and our own capabilities that we are ready to listen to others. Above all we must be ready to be taught by the Spirit, and led by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Meekness always implies a teachable spirit.

 

“저는 온유를 이렇게 말씀드리려고 합니다. 모든 것, 우리 자신, 권리, 대의, 앞날의 모두를 하나님의 손에 맡겨야 합니다. 그리고 부당하게 고통을 당하고 있다고 생각될 때 특히 그래야 합니다.”

"Finally, I would put it like this. We are to leave everything- ourselves, our rights, our cause, our whole future- in the hands of God, and especially so if we feel we are suffering unjustly."

“온유한 사람들은 복이 있다. 그들이 땅을 얻을 것이다. 무슨 뜻입니까? 이것을 간략하게 요약할 수 있겠습니다. 온유한 사람은 이미 이생에서 땅을 얻습니다. 참으로 온유한 사람은 항상 만족을 얻는 사람입니다. 그는 이미 만족하고 있는 사람입니다. 골드스미스는 이것을 잘 표현해서 말하기를 ‘아무 것도 갖고 있지 않으나 모든 것을 가지고 있다’고 했습니다. 사도 바울은 이것을 더 훌륭히 표현해서 ‘아무 것도 가지지 않은 자 같으나 모든 것을 소유한 자로다’라고 했습니다.”

"'Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth.' What does that mean? We can summarize it very briefly. The meek already inherit the earth in this life, in this way. A man who is truly meek is a man who is always satisfied, he is a man who is already content. Goldsmith expresses it well when he says: 'Having nothing yet hath all.' The apostle Paul has put it still better, for he says, 'as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.'"  

“온유는 여러분이나 제가 만들 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 온유는 성령께서 우리들 속에 만드시는 하나의 성격입니다. ............. 그러면 우리는 무엇을 해야 하는가? 우리는 이 산상설교를 자주 대해야 하며 온유에 대한 본문 말씀을 묵상해야 하며 실례들을 살펴보아야 합니다. 그리고 무엇보다 주를 바라보아야 합니다. 그런 다음 겸손해져서 우리의 사람됨이 부족할 뿐 아니라 철저할 정도로 불완전함을 부끄럽게 고백해야 합니다. 그런 다음 우리의 모든 문제의 원인이 되는 자아와 절교해야 합니다. 그래야만 자기 희생으로 우리를 값주고 사신 주께서 들어오셔서 우리를 소유하실 수 있습니다.”

"It is not something that you do and I do. It is a character that is produced in us by the Spirit. It is the direct fruit of the Spirit. It is offered to us and it is possible for us all. What have we to do? We must face this Sermon on the Mount; we must meditate upon this statement about being meek; we must look at the examples; above all we must look at the Lord Himself. Then we must humble ourselves and confess with shame, not only the smallness of our stature, but our utter imperfection. Then we must finish with that self which is the cause of all our troubles, so that He who has bought us at such a price may come in and possess us wholly."
