THE NEXT BEST THING TO DO

“For everyone that asketh receiveth.”

                             Luke 11:10

 

Ask if you have not Received. There is nothing more difficult than to ask. We will long and desire and crave and suffer, but not until we are at the extreme limit will we ask. A sense of unreality makes us ask. Have you ever asked out of the depths of moral poverty? “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God . . .” but be sure that you do lack wisdom. You cannot bring yourself up against Reality when you like. The next best thing to do if you are not spiritually real, is to ask God for the Holy Spirit on the word of Jesus Christ (see Luke 11:13). The Holy Spirit is the one Who makes real in you all that Jesus did for you.

“For every.one that asketh receiveth.” This does not mean you will not get if you do not ask (cf. Mat. 5:45), but until you get to the point of asking you won’t receive from God. To receive means you have come into the relationship of a child of God, and now you perceive with intelligent and moral appreciation and spiritual understanding that these things come from God.

“If any of you lack wisdom . . .” If you realize you are lacking, it is because you have come in contact with spiritual reality; do not put your reasonable blinkers on again. “Ask” means beg. Some people are poor enough to be interested in their poverty, and some of us are like that spiritually. We will never receive if we ask with an end in view; if we ask, not out of our poverty but out of our lust. A pauper does not ask from any other reason than the abject panging condition of his poverty; he is not ashamed to beg.

needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a

shadow from the heat.”

“구하는 이마다 받을 것이요.”

                               누가복음 11:10

 

당신이 만일 받지 못했으면 구하라. 구하는 것보다 더 어려운 일은 없다. 우리는 갈망하고 부탁하고 간청하고 참을 것이다. 그러나 극단의 한계에 도달하지 않으면 구하지 않을 것이다. 실재하지 않는 것이라는 판단력이 우리로 하여금 구하게 만든다. 당신은 도덕적 빈곤의 심연에서 구해본 적이 있는가? “만일 너희 중 누가 지혜가 부족하거든 그로 하여금 하나님께 구하도록 하라…,” 그러나 너희가 지혜가 부족하다는 것을 확인하라. 당신이 좋아할 때 실체에 대항하여 스스로 문제를 제기할 수는 없다. 만일 당신이 영적으로 진실하지 않다면 차선책은 예수 그리스도의 말씀에 의지하여 성령을 달라고 하나님께 구하는 것이다(눅 11:13참조). 성령은 예수님께서 당신을 위해 행하신 모든 것을 당신 안에서 현실화시키는 인격이시다.

“구하는 이마다 받을 것이요.” 이것은 만일 당신이 구하지 않으면 받지 못할 것이라는 의미는 아니다(마 5:45 참조). 그러나 당신이 구하는 지경에 도달할 때까지는 하나님으로부터 받지 못할 것이다. 받는다는 것은 당신이 하나님의 어린아이로의 관계가 형성되었다는 것을 의미한다. 그리하여 이제는 이 모든 것들이 하나님으로부터 발생한다는 것을 지적이고 도덕적인 평가와 영적 해석으로 당신이 깨닫게 되는 것이다.

“너희 중에 누구든지 지혜가 부족하거든…” 만일 당신이 부족함을 깨닫는다면 그건 당신이 영적 실체를 만났기 때문이다. 당신의 적당한 색안경을 다시 써서 판단을 흐리게 하는 일이 없도록 하시오. “구하라”는 것은 “간청하라”는 의미다. 어떤 사람들은 자신들의 빈곤에 관심을 가지는 것이 당연할 정도로 몹시 가난하다. 그리고 우리들 중 어떤 사람들은 그와 같이 심령이 가난하다. 만일 우리가 어떤 목적을 기대하여 구한다면 결코 받지 못할 것이다. 우리의 빈곤에서가 아니고 우리의 정욕에서 구한다면 결코 받지 못할 것이다. 극빈자는 고통스럽고 비참한 극빈상태가 아닌 다른 이유에서 구하는 것이 아니다. 그러므로 그는 부끄러워하지 않고 간청한다.

—심령이 가난한 자는 복이 있다.

 

주님, 주님이 교회 안에서 “가난한 자들에게 힘, 고통 중에

필요로 하는 자에게 힘, 폭풍으로부터의 피난처, 열을 가려주는

그늘”이 되심이 입증됨으로 인하여 저는 이 교회를 위하여

주님을 찬양합니다.
