THE NEXT BEST THING TO DO

“Seek, and ye shall find.”

                                       Luke 11:9

 

Seek if you have not Found. “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss.” If you ask for things from life instead of from God, you ask amiss, that is, you ask from a desire for self-realization. The more you realize yourself the less will you seek God. “Seek, and ye shall find.” Get to work, narrow your interests to this one. Have you ever sought God with your whole heart, or have you only given a languid cry to Him after a twinge of moral neuralgia? Seek, concentrate, and you will find.

“Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.” Are you thirsty, or smugly indifferent—so satisfied with your experience that you want nothing more of God? Experience is a gateway, not an end. Beware of building your faith on experience, the metallic note will come in at once, the censorious note. You can never give another person that which you have found, but you can make him homesick for what you have.

“Knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” “Draw nigh to God.” Knock—the door is closed, and you suffer from palpitation as you knock. “Cleanse your hands”—knock a bit louder, you begin to find you are dirty. “Purify your heart”—this is more personal still, you are desperately in earnest now—you will do anything. “Be afflicted”—have you ever been afflicted before God at the state of your inner life? There is no strand of self-pity left, but a heartbreaking affliction of amazement to find you are the kind of person that you are. “Humble yourself”—it is a humbling business to knock at God’s door—you have to knock with the crucified thief. “To him that knocketh, it shall be opened.”

 

O Lord, I would that I had a livelier sense of Thee

and of Thy bounties continually with me.

“찾으라 그러면 찾아낼 것이요”

                               누가복음 11:9

 

만일 당신이 찾아내지 못했으면 찾을 때까지 노력하라. “너희가 구하여도 받지 못함은 너희가 잘못 구하기 때문이라.”(약 4:3) 만일 당신이 하나님의 관점에서가 아니고 삶의 필요에서 구한다면 당신은 잘못 구하는 것이다. 말하자면 당신은 자아실현의 욕구에서 구한다. 당신이 자아를 실현하면 할수록 당신은 하나님을 덜 찾게 될 것이다. “찾으라 그러면 찾아낼 것이요.” 사역을 시작하라, 당신의 관심사항들을 이 하나로 좁혀라. 당신은 전심으로 하나님을 찾아본 적이 있는가? 그렇지 않으면 양심가책의 고통을 겪은 후 열의 없이 부르짖는 기도만 드렸는가? 찾으라, 집중하라 그러면 당신은 찾아낼 것이다.

“목마른 사람은 누구든지 내게로 와서 마시라”(요 7:37). 당신은 목마른가? 그렇지 않으면 당신의 체험에 매우 만족하여 하나님이 더 이상 필요 없다고 잘난 체하며 무관심한 채로 있는가? 체험은 목적이 아니고 통로에 불과하다. 당신의 믿음을 체험의 바탕 위에 세우지 말라. 체험에 집착하면 즉시 귀에 거슬리는 금속음이 끼어들어 균형 잡힌 신앙생활이 흔들릴 수 있게 될 것이다. 당신이 찾아낸 것을 다른 사람에게 결코 줄 수는 없지만 그 사람도 당신이 찾아내 소유하고 있는 것을 몹시 그리워하도록 영향력을 행사할 수는 있다.

“문을 두드리라 그러면 너희에게 열릴 것이니.” “하나님을 가까이하라”(약 4:8). 문을 두드리라—문은 닫혀있고 당신이 문을 두드릴 때 당신은 심장박동으로 인해 고통을 느낀다. “손을 깨끗이 하라”—문을 좀 더 세게 두드리라, 당신이 더럽다는 것을 당신은 깨닫기 시작한다. “마음을 성결하게 하라”—이것은 아직 더 개인적인 것이다, 당신은 절망적으로 이제 진지해진다—당신은 무엇이든 할 것이다. “괴로워하라”—당신의 내적 삶의 상태로 인해 하나님 앞에서 마음 아파한 적이 있었는가? 자기 연민의 요소는 남아 있지 않지만 당신이 현재 어떠한 종류의 사람인지 깨닫고 너무 놀라 가슴을 찢는 고통을 겪고 있다. “주 앞에서 너 자신을 낮추라”—하나님의 문을 두드리는 것은 자신을 겸손하게 낮추는 일이다—십자가에 못박힌 강도와 함께 당신은 문을 두드려야 한다. “문을 두드리는 이에게 열릴 것이니라.”

 

오 주님, 쉬지 않고 저와 함께하는 주님과 주님의 풍성한

은혜의 진가에 대하여 더 생생하게 판단하게 하옵소서.
