GETTING THERE

“Master, where dwellest Thou?. . . Come and see.” “Come

                            with Me.

                                 John 1:38-39

 

Where the self-interest sleeps and the real interest awakens. “They abode with Him that day.” That is about all some of us ever do, then we wake up to actualities, self-interest arises and the abiding is passed. There is no condition of life in which we cannot abide in Jesus.

“Thou art Simon, thou shalt be called Cephas.” God writes the new name on those places only in our lives where He has erased the pride and self-sufficiency and self-interest. Some of us have the new name in spots only, like spiritual measles. In sections we look all right. When we have our best spiritual mood on, you would think we were very high-toned saints; but don’t look at us when we are not in that mood. The disciple is one who has the new name written all over him; self-interest and pride and self-sufficiency have been completely erased.

Pride is the deification of self, and this to-day in some of us is not of the order of the Pharisee, but of the publican. To say “Oh, I’m no saint,” is acceptable to human pride, but it is unconscious blasphemy against God. It literally means that you defy God to make you a saint. “I am much too weak and hopeless.” Humility before men may be unconscious blasphemy before God. Why are you not a saint? It is either that you do not want to be a saint, or that you do not believe God can make you one. It would be all right, you say, if God saved you and took you straight to heaven. That is just what He will do! “We will come unto Him, and make our abode with Him.” Make no conditions, let Jesus be everything, and He will take you home with Him not only for a day, but forever.

 

O Lord, how much the margins of my mind are taken

up with surrounding interests of late so that the

surroundings seem the centre. Be Thou Thyself my

strong Centre and Surrounding.

“선생님, 어디 계시오니이까? …와서 보라.”

                             “나랑 같이 가자.”

                                               요한복음 1:38-39

 

이기심이 잠자고 진정한 유익이 눈뜨는 곳. “그들은 그날 주님과 함께 거했다.” 그것은 우리들 중 일부가 항시 일상적으로 하는 일에 관한 얘기다. 그런 다음 우리는 실상에 대해서 눈을 뜨고 이기심이 발생하고 동거함은 망각되어 지난 과거사로 묻히고 만다. 우리가 예수님 안에 거할 수 없는 삶의 조건이 존재하는 것이 아니다.

“네가 시몬이니 장차 게바라 하리라.” 하나님께서는 우리들 삶 가운데 자존심과 교만과 이기심을 지워버리신 장소들 위에만 새로운 이름을 쓰신다. 우리들 중에는 영적 홍역처럼 얼룩점 형태로만 새로운 이름을 가진 사람이 있다. 해체하여 보면 우리가 정상으로 보인다. 우리가 영적으로 최상의 기분일 때 당신은 우리가 높은 품격의 성도라고 생각할 것이다. 그러나 우리가 그러한 기분 상태에 놓여 있지 않을 때는 우리를 바라보지 말라. 제자는 그의 인격 전체에 걸쳐 인정받고 쓰여진 새로운 이름을 가진 사람을 말한다. 이기심과 자존심과 교만은 완전히 지워져 버렸다.

자존심은 자신을 신격화하는 것인데 이것은 오늘날 우리들 중 일부에서 바리새인의 질서에 속하지 아니하고 세금 징수원의 질서에 속한다. “오, 나는 성도가 아니야.”라고 말하는 것은 인간 자존심에는 용납될 수 있지만 무의식적으로 하나님에게 욕설을 퍼붓는 불손한 언동이다. 그것은 문자적으로 당신을 성도로 만들고자 하는 하나님을 무시하고 “나는 너무 연약하고 희망이 없다”라고 당신이 말하는 것을 의미한다. 사람들 앞에서 겸손한 것은 하나님 앞에서는 무의식적으로 신성을 모독하는 언동이 될 수 있다. 당신이 성도가 아닌 이유는 무엇인가? 당신이 성도가 되는 것을 원하지 않거나 당신을 성도로 만들 수 있는 하나님의 능력을 믿지 않거나 둘 중 하나의 경우다. 만일 하나님께서 당신을 구원하여 바로 천국으로 데려가신다면 좋다고 당신은 말한다. 그것이 정말로 주님께서 하실 일이다! “우리는 그에게로 나아가 그와 함께 거할 것이다.” 아무 조건도 달지 말라. 예수님이 모든 것이 되게 하라. 그러면 주님께서 당신을 하루뿐만 아니라 영원히 안식하게 하실 것이다.

 

오 주님, 제 마음의 여백들이 최근에 주변부 이해관계들로

얼마나 가득 차 있는지 주변부가 중심인 것으로 생각될

정도입니다. 주님 자신이 제 중심과 주변부가 되어주시옵소서.
