ALL NOBLE THINGS ARE DIFFICULT

“Enter ye in at the strait gate . . . : because strait is the gate,

                            and narrow is the way. . .”

                                                                                            Matthew 7:13-14

 

If we are going to live as disciples of Jesus, we have to remember that all noble things are difficult. The Christian life is gloriously difficult, but the difficulty of it does not make us faint and cave in, it rouses us up to overcome. Do we so appreciate the marvelous salvation of Jesus Christ that we are our utmost for His highest?

God saves men by His sovereign grace through the Atonement of Jesus; He works in us to will and to do of His good pleasure; but we have to work out that salvation in practical living. If once we start on the basis of His Redemption to do what He commands, we find that we can do it. If we fail, it is because we have not practiced. The crisis will reveal whether we have been practicing or not. If we obey the Spirit of God and practice in our physical life what God has put in us by His Spirit, then when the crisis comes, we shall find that our own nature as well as the grace of God will stand by us.

Thank God He does give us difficult things to do! His salvation is a glad thing, but it is also a heroic, holy thing. It tests us for all we are worth. Jesus is bringing many “sons” unto glory, and God will not shield us from the requirements of a son. God’s grace turns out men and women with a strong family likeness to Jesus Christ, not milksops. It takes a tremendous amount of discipline to live the noble life of a disciple of Jesus in actual things. It is always necessary to make an effort to be noble.

 

Lord, how completely I need Thee and ache for Thee.

Return unto me in completeness, and as Thy life fills

up the limits of mind and spirit and overflows, glory

will be to Thy Name.

숭고한 일은 모두 어렵다

“좁은 문으로 들어가라…문은 좁고

                             길이 협착하기 때문이다.”

                          마태복음 7:13-14

 

우리가 만일 예수님의 제자로서 살 작정이라면 숭고한 일은 모두 어렵다는 것을 기억해야 한다. 그리스도인 삶은 영예롭게 어렵다. 그러나 그것의 어려움은 우리를 기절하게 하여 항복하게 하지 않고 우리를 격려하여 극복하게 만든다. 예수 그리스도의 놀랄만한 구원에 우리가 감사하여 최고의 주님께 우리가 최선을 다하는가?

하나님께서는 예수님의 속죄를 통한 자신의 주권적 은혜에 의해 인간을 구원하신다. 하나님께서는 주님의 고결한 즐거움 때문에 우리가 결심하여 수행하도록 우리 안에서 역사하신다. 그러나 우리는 실제적인 삶에서 구원을 완성해야 한다. 하나님께서 명령하시는 것을 수행하기 위해서 주님의 구속을 근거로 하여 우리가 일단 출발하면 우리가 그걸 해낼 수 있다는 것을 알게 된다. 만일 우리가 실패한다면 그것은 우리가 실행하지 않았기 때문이다. 우리가 실행해 오고 있었는지 그렇지 않았는지의 여부는 위기가 닥치면 드러날 것이다. 우리가 만일 하나님의 성령에 순종하여 성령을 통해 우리 안에 부어주신 것을 우리의 실생활에서 실행한다면 그 다음 위기가 닥칠 때 하나님의 은혜는 물론 우리 자신의 본성이 우리를 도울 것이라는 사실을 우리가 깨닫게 될 것이다.

우리에게 수행할 어려운 일들을 주시는 하나님께 감사하라! 하나님의 구원은 기쁨을 가져다 주는 일이다. 그렇지만 그것은 또한 영웅적이고 거룩한 일이다. 그 구원은 우리가 할만한 가치가 있는 모든 것으로 인해서 우리를 시험한다. 예수님께서 많은 “아들들”을 영광으로 인도하고 계신다. 그리고 하나님께서 아들의 필요 조건들로부터 우리를 보호하실 것이다. 하나님의 은혜는 나약한 사람들이 아니라 예수 그리스도를 가족처럼 닮은 강한 인격을 갖춘 사람들로 변화시킨다. 실제적인 상황에서 예수님의 제자로서의 숭고한 삶을 살기 위해서는 굉장한 양의 훈련을 필요로 한다. 숭고해지기 위해서 노력하는 것이 항상 필요하다.

 

주님, 제가 얼마나 철저하게 주님을 필요로 하며 주님을

그리워하는지요! 완전함으로 제게 돌아오시옵소서, 그리하여

주님의 생명이 마음과 영의 한도를 가득 채우고 넘쳐흐름에

따라 영광이 주님의 이름에 돌려지기를 원하옵니다.
