THE SPIRITUAL SAINT

That I may know Him.

                                                                              Philippians 3:10

 

The initiative of the saint is not towards self-realization, but towards knowing Jesus Christ. The spiritual saint never believes circumstances to be haphazard, or thinks of his life as secular and sacred; he sees everything he is dumped down in as the means of securing the knowledge of Jesus Christ. There is a reckless abandonment about him. The Holy Spirit is determined that we shall realize Jesus Christ in every domain of life, and He will bring us back to the same point again and again until we do. Self-realization leads to the enthronement of work; whereas the saint enthrones Jesus Christ in his work. Whether it be eating or drinking or washing disciples’ feet, whatever it is, we have to take the initiative of realizing Jesus Christ in it. Every phase of our actual life has its counterpart in the life of Jesus. Our Lord realized His relationship to the Father even in the most menial work. “Jesus knowing . . . that He was come from God, and went to God . . . took a towel . . . and began to wash the disciples’ feet.”

The aim of the spiritual saint is “that I may know Him.” Do I know Him where I am today? If not, I am failing Him. I am here not to realize myself, but to know Jesus. In Christian work the initiative is too often the realization that something has to be done and I must do it. That is never the attitude of the spiritual saint; his aim is to secure the realization of Jesus Christ in every set of circumstances he is in.

 

O Lord, in simple dependence on Thy Holy Spirit

indwelling in me and uniting me with Thy nature, I

look to Thee; cause me to be all Thou wouldst have me

be.

영적인 성도

“내가 그리스도를 알고자 하여.”

                                     빌립보서 3:10

 

성도의 독창력은 자아실현을 향한 것이 아니라 예수 그리스도를 알기 위한 것이다. 영적인 성도는 환경을 우연한 것으로 결코 믿지 않고 또는 자기 삶을 세속적이고 신성한 것으로 생각하지 아니한다. 그는 자신이 처해 있는 모든 것을 예수 그리스도에 대한 지식을 확보하는 수단으로 바라본다. 자신에 대해 앞뒤를 헤아리지 않고 무모하게 포기한다. 우리가 삶의 모든 영역에서 예수 그리스도를 실현해야 한다고 성령님께서 결단하시고 우리가 그렇게 행동할 때까지 몇 번이고 반복해서 우리를 동일한 지점으로 인도하실 것이다. 자아실현은 사역의 우상화로 이른다. 그것이 먹는 것 또는 마시는 것 또는 제자들의 발을 씻는 것이든지 그것이 어떤 것일지라도 그 안에서 예수 그리스도를 실현하는 독창력을 우리가 발휘해야 한다. 우리의 실질적인 삶에는 예수님의 삶에 상응하는 모든 국면이 존재한다. 우리 주님께서는 가장 천한 머슴 사역에서 조차 아버지 하나님에 대한 그의 관계를 실현하셨다. “예수는…자기가 하나님께로부터 오셨다가 하나님께로 돌아가실 것을 아시고…수건을 가져다가…제자들의 발을 씻기 시작하셨다”(요 13:3-5).

영적인 성도의 목적은 “예수 그리스도를 알려 하는 것이다.” 오늘 내가 처한 장소에서 주님을 내가 제대로 알고 있는가? 만일 그렇지 못하다면, 내가 주님을 실망시키고 있는 중이다. 내 자신을 실현하기 위해서가 아니고 예수를 알기 위해 내가 여기 존재한다. 무엇인가 실행되어야 하는데 내가 그것을 맡아 수행하지 않으면 안 된다는 깨달음이 독창력이라고 크리스천 사역에 있어서 너무 자주 언급된다. 그것이 영적인 성도의 태도가 결코 아니다. 영적인 성도의 목적은 그가 처한 모든 상황 속에서 예수 그리스도의 실현을 확보하는 것이 되어야 한다.

 

오 주님, 제 안에 거하시며 당신의 성품에 저를 일치시키시는

당신의 성령에 단순히 의지하고 제가 당신을 바라봅니다.

저로 하여금 주님께서 제게 원하시는 전부가 되도록

역사하여주시옵소서.
