THE SPHERE OF EXALTATION

“Jesus leadeth them up into a high mountain apart by themselves.”

                                                      Mark 9:2

 

We have all had times on the mount, when we have seen things from God’s standpoint and have wanted to stay there; but God will never allow us to stay there. The test of our spiritual life is the power to descend; if we have power to rise only, something is wrong. It is a great thing to be on the mount with God, but a man only gets there in order that afterwards he may get down among the devil-possessed and lift them up. We are not built for the mountains and the dawns and aesthetic affinities, those are for moments of inspiration, that is all. We are built for the valley, for the ordinary stuff we are in, and that is where we have to prove our mettle. Spiritual selfishness always wants repeated moments on the mount. We feel we could talk like angels and live like angels, if only we could stay on the mount. The times of exaltation are exceptional, they have their meaning in our life with God, but we must beware lest our spiritual selfishness wants to make them the only one time.

We are apt to think that everything that happens is to be turned into useful teaching, it is to be turned into something better than teaching, viz., into character. The mount is not meant to teach us anything, it is meant to make us something. There is a great snare in asking—What is the use of it? In spiritual matters we can never calculate on that line. The moments on the mountain tops are rare moments, and they are meant for something in God’s purpose.

 

Lord, my chief desire is to be rooted and grounded in

Thee—God-centred and God-absorbed, God-enthused

and God-loved. How eager my soul is to know Thee

and be still!

승귀의 영역

“예수께서 그들을 데리고 따로 높은 산에 올라가셨더니

                               그들 앞에서 변형되사.”

                               마가복음 9:2

 

우리는 모두 산 정상에서 시간들을 보낸 적이 있다. 그때 우리는 하나님의 관점에서 사물을 봤으며 거기 머물기를 원했다. 그러나 우리가 거기 머물도록 하나님께서 결코 허락하지 않으실 것이다. 우리의 영적 삶을 시험해보는 것은 하강하는 능력이다. 우리가 만일 올라가는 능력만 있다면 무엇인가 잘못된 것이다. 하나님과 함께 정상에 있는 것은 훌륭한 일이다. 그러나 사람은 귀신에 사로잡힌 사람들 사이로 나중에 내려와서 그들을 들어올릴 수 있기 위해서만 정상에 올라가는 것이다. 우리는 산들과 새벽들과 심미적인 친근감들을 위해서 지음 받는 것이 아니다. 그것들은 영감의 순간들을 위해 존재하며, 그것이 전부다. 우리는 계곡을 위해서, 우리가 처한 일상적인 것들을 위해서 지음 받으며, 그것이 우리가 우리의 기개를 입증해야 하는 장소다. 영적 이기심은 항상 반복되는 순간들을 정상에서 누리기를 원한다. 우리가 만일 정상에 머물 수만 있다면 천사들처럼 이야기하고 천사들처럼 살 수 있을 것이라고 우리는 생각한다. 승귀(높이 들리우심)의 시간들은 예외적인 것으로서 우리가 하나님과 동행하며 생활할 때 의미가 있는 것이다. 그러나 우리의 영적 이기심이 승귀의 시간들이 최상의 시간이라고 생각하여 탐내지 아니하도록 우리가 조심해야 한다.

발생하는 모든 것은 유익한 교훈으로 바뀌어야 하고, 나아가 교훈보다 더 좋은 무엇인가 즉, 성격으로 바뀌어야 한다고 생각하는 경향이 우리에게 있다. 정상은 무엇인가를 우리에게 가르치기 위한 것이 아니고 무엇인가로 우리를 만들기 위한 것이다. 그것의 용도가 무엇이지? 라고 묻는 데는 대단한 함정이 있다. 영적 문제들에 있어서는 그 점에 관해서 우리가 결코 예측할 수 없다. 산 정상의 순간들은 드물게 발생하는 순간들이며, 그 순간들은 하나님의 목적에 따라 무엇인가를 이루기 위한 것들이다.

 

주님, 하나님 중심으로 그리고 하나님에 몰두하여, 하나님에

열중하여, 하나님을 사랑함으로써 가장 중요한 저의 소망은

주님에 기초를 두고 주님 안에 뿌리를 내려야 합니다. 주님을

알기 위해 저의 영혼이 얼마나 갈망하며 침묵하고 있는지요!
