THE KEY TO THE MISSIONARY

“All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye

                               therefore, and teach all nations.”

                                                                                   Matthew 28:18-19

 

The basis of missionary appeals is the authority of Jesus Christ, not the needs of the heathen. We are apt to look upon Our Lord as one Who assists us in our enterprises for God. Our Lord puts Himself as the absolute sovereign supreme Lord over His disciples. He does not say the heathen will be lost if we do not go; he simply says—“Go ye therefore and teach all nations.” Go on the revelation of My sovereignty; teach and preach out of a living experience of Me.

“Then the eleven disciples went…unto a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.” v. 16. If I want to know the universal sovereignty of Christ, I must know Him for myself, and how to get alone with Him; I must take time to worship the Being Whose Name I bear. “Come unto Me”—that is the place to meet Jesus. Are you weary and heavy laden? How many missionaries are! We banish those marvelous words of the universal Sovereign of the world to the threshold of an after-meeting; they are the words of Jesus to His disciples.

“Go ye therefore…” Go simply means live. Acts 1:8 is the description of how to go. Jesus did not say—Go into Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria, but, “Ye shall be witnesses unto Me” in all these places. He undertakes to establish the goings.

“If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you…”—that is the way to keep going in our personal lives. Where we are placed is a matter of indifference; God engineers the goings.

“None of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself…” That is how to keep going till we’re gone.

 

O Lord, be so really present here in this place that

every man coming in may realize that it is God’s house

in deed and in truth.

“하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 내게 주셨으니 그러므로

                                  너희는 가서 모든 민족을 가르치라.”

                                   마태복음 28:18-19

 

선교사 호소력의 논거는 이교도들의 필요성이 아니고 예수 그리스도의 권위다. 우리는 하나님을 위한 우리의 대담한 계획에 있어서 우리 주님을 우리를 도우시는 분으로 여기는 경향이 있다. 우리 주님께서는 자신의 제자들에 대해서 자신을 절대적인 주권적 최상의 주님의 위치에 두신다. 우리가 만일 가지 않으면 이교도들을 잃게 될 것이라고 주님께서 말씀하시지 않는다. “그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족을 가르치라.”고 간단히 말씀하신다. 나의 주권에 속하는 계시에 따라 앞으로 나아가라. 나에 대한 살아 있는 체험으로부터 가르치고 전도하라.

“그런 다음 열한 제자가 예수께서 그들을 임명했었던 산으로 갔다” (마 28:16). 내가 만일 그리스도의 만유의 주권을 알고 싶다면 혼자 힘으로 주님을 알아야 하고 또한 주님을 홀로 만나는 방법을 알아야 한다. 내가 이름을 전하는 그분의 존재를 예배하기 위해 내가 시간을 바쳐야 한다. “내게로 오라”는 대로 따르면 그것이 바로 예수님을 만나는 장소가 된다. 당신은 지쳐 있고 무거운 짐을 짊어지고 있는가? 얼마나 많은 선교사들이 있는가! 우리가 나중에 예수 그리스도를 만나게 되는 장소의 문지방으로 이 세상에 내려오신 만유의 주권자의 놀라운 말씀들을 우리는 쫓아낸다. 그들은 예수님께서 자기 제자들에게 주시는 말씀들이다.

“그러므로 너희는 가서…” 가라는 말의 의미는 생활하라는 뜻을 간단히 표현한 것이다. 사도행전 1장 8절 말씀은 가는 방법을 서술한 내용이다. 예수님께서는 예루살렘과 유대와 사마리아로 들어가라고 말씀하시지 않고 이러한 장소들 모두에서 “너희가 앞으로 내 증인이 되어야 한다.”라고 말씀하셨다. 주님께서 책임지고 진행방법을 수립하신다.

“너희가 내 안에 거하고 내 말이 너희 안에 거하면…” 그것이 우리 개인 생활에서 계속 앞으로 나아가는 방법이다. 우리가 어디 있는지는 사소한 일이다. 하나님께서 진행방법을 능숙하게 처리하신다.

“이러한 것들 중에 나의 마음을 움직이는 것은 아무것도 없다. …나는 나의 생명조차 나에게 귀한 것으로 여기지 않는다”(행 20:23-24). 그것이 우리의 생명이 다 할 때까지 계속 앞으로 나아가는 방법이다.

 

오 주님, 정말로 여기 이곳에 임재하셔서 들어오는 모든 사람이

그것이 실제로 진리 안에서 하나님의 집인 것을 깨달을 수 있게

하옵소서.
